The College of Engineering School of Civil and Construction Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head


The Research Associate will support research and education in the College of Engineering School of Civil and Construction Engineering with focus in the Coastal and Ocean Engineering discipline.

The Research Associate will be responsible for the administration, design, and execution of field and lab projects related to coastal and oceanographic advances in ocean technology and coastal dynamics projects.

They will support data management and analysis related to the presentation and publication of rigorous and impactful scientific advancements in the fields of marine geology and coastal engineering.

This position will perform lab management duties within the laboratory group. Tasks include organizing instrumentation, maintaining safety documentation and compliance, training new users of equipment, managing rental procedures and instruments, and supporting data collection and/or processing for contracted services.

All employees are expected to be collegial members of their units. Safety is an integral part of physical experiments, both in research and teaching. Employees are expected to prioritize health and safety in the execution of their professional activities.

Key Responsibilities

40% - Planning, supporting, and executing data collection in the field and the lab; data processing and management; and rigorous analysis related to oceanographic distributed fiber-optic sensing, coastal protection through natural and nature-based solutions, and coastal morphologic evolution.

20% – Participating in the preparation and presentation of technical and scientific papers in local, regional, national, and international conferences and scientific journals. Writing/assist in writing competitive research proposals and assist in managing successful research proposals.

20% – Management of laboratory resources, including organizing instrumentation, maintaining safety documentation and compliance, training new users of equipment, managing rental procedures and instruments, and supporting data collection and/or processing for contracted services.



10% - Mentoring and training graduate and undergraduate students.

5% – Maintaining and supporting engagement with the Hatfield Marine Science Center, relevant research communities, and stakeholder communities.

5% – Continually improving their technical and scientific capability through additional formal and informal training related to the field.



What You Will Need

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.



What We Would Like You to Have



Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The incumbent will typically have flexibility in their specific working hours, but is expected to be available during normal business hours for meetings and discussions related to projects. They will occasionally need to participate in field work, which may sometimes include extended periods of standing and traversing uneven/rugged terrain. The candidate will periodically travel to conferences and scientific meetings.
