Job description

Position Summary:
The World Language Instructor position is a full-time faculty position that includes instruction, office hours and professional contributions to the college community to create an innovative and engaging learning environment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Teach first-year and second-year college-level courses in a minimum of two languages including Arabic. Additional languages may include French, German, Japanese, or Spanish.
• Serve as lead faculty for the two languages of expertise. This includes coordinating curriculum and assessment, as well as onboarding and training part-time faculty.
• Teach a diverse student body in daytime, evening, and if needed weekend classes in person; develop and teach online courses as needed.
• Syllabus writing, textbook selection, and curriculum planning and development
• Participate in program level learning assessment, which includes helping articulate learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, collecting and submitting relevant data, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
• Participate in program marketing, community outreach, and the development of co-curricular activities.
• Provide leadership in identifying trends and working with other faculty to develop new curriculum to address these trends; maintain transferability of courses.
• Participate in department, division, and general faculty meetings, applicable college committee activities, and other forms of college service.
• Remain current in academic or program discipline, including attending professional conferences, and maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
• Participate in college professional development activities and stay current in technological or pedagogical advances that promote student learning.
• Other duties as assigned.

Hours/Schedule:
• Teach a minimum of 15 credit hours during fall and winter semester
• On campus presence at least four days per week during the academic year
• Being a professional faculty member at Washtenaw Community College is a year-round responsibility which includes curriculum development, professional improvement and development, and other professional responsibilities.

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• One of the following credentials in Arabic: Earned Master’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited institution in the language or culture OR master’s degree with a minimum 18 graduate credits in the language OR master’s degree and “Distinguished” or “Superior” rating on the  ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Tests for Higher Education in French OR fluent native speaker with relevant Master’s degree.
• One of the above credentials is also needed in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish.
• Equivalent of two (2) years of full-time successful teaching experience, preferably at the community college level or higher.
• Demonstrated experience in preparing instructional materials and teaching language courses.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching both in person and online.
