Job Role:
We seek to appoint an exceptionally high-calibre teacher with superb subject knowledge to stimulate, inspire and challenge our high-achieving pupils and who is prepared to give full commitment to the aims and ethos of the Science Department and to Guildford High School. We are looking for a dynamic leader who will be able to continue to improve upon the already outstanding teaching within the Department. The successful candidate will be confident in developing new initiatives and ideas to drive the Department forward and will have good attention to detail to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives. The successful candidate should have a warm, friendly and supportive teaching style to nurture the pupils’ interest in Chemistry.
Science at Guildford High School
The Science Department comprises Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science, which are taught throughout the School, and Psychology, which is taught at A-level only. The Department has an excellent record of academic success at IGCSE, A Level and Oxbridge entry. Over half of our Sixth Form pupils choose one or more science subjects at A Level, with around 40 pupils each year choosing to study A Level Chemistry. We follow the OCR A A-level specification Chemistry. Each year a significant number of pupils go on to study degree courses in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Medicine and Natural Sciences.
All pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects from Year 7 and are taught by subject specialists. In Years 7 and 8 the pupils study our own bespoke curriculum, which develops practical and investigative skills as well as providing a solid foundation for IGCSE. In Year 9 pupils start the Edexcel IGCSE course, following a scheme of work suitable for progression to either Double Award Science or Chemistry IGCSE. In Year 10 the pupils choose either Double Award Science or the three separate sciences. Science is popular at Guildford High School and the majority of students opt for separate sciences.
The Science facilities are excellent. There are 12 spacious, modern and well-equipped laboratories, all with interactive screens, and four preparation rooms. Four of the laboratories and two of the preparation rooms are used by the Chemistry Department, and we have two dedicated Chemistry technicians. We also have use of the dedicated Sixth Form Laboratory. There are currently seven members of the Chemistry Department, several of whom have other roles within school.
Numerous STEM clubs are run by the Science Department including Year 7 Science club, CREST projects, Research in School projects, Science in the News, and reading groups. To enrich our students academically we take them to relevant public lectures, and they achieve highly at all levels in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, Chemistry Olympiad and Top of the Bench practical competitions. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to these initiatives or to develop new ones.
This is not intended to be exhaustive, and the post holder may perform other duties reasonably required by the Head. Applicants will need to already hold the right to work in the UK and, if short-listed, be able to attend an interview at the school.
