What you will do in your working day
VPI Rye House are looking for an apprentice to train alongside our existing, experienced team. As an apprentice you will study a range of programmes working towards a Level 3 Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship standard, covering a variety of skills and qualifications while earning a wage and completing invaluable practical skills in industry. You will be working alongside a mentor and assisting the experienced process shift team with the following duties:
Main Duties and responsibilities.
You will be working towards achieving the level of competence undertaking a range of duties which will include:
- Working as part of the maintenance team to deliver the safe and efficient maintenance of the plant & apparatus to the appropriate standards within the Power Station. Including but not exclusive to the following:
- Gas & Steam Turbines
- Boilers (Main & Auxiliary)
- HVAC systems
- Compressed Air & Vacuum Systems
- Gas Systems
- Chemical / Water Treatment Systems
- This will include Routine and Breakdown Maintenance as well as monitoring, recording & reporting plant conditions
- Work effectively as part of a team and where necessary use their own initiative to minimise plant downtime, improve reliability and minimise costs
- Manage contracts and provide supervision of designated people during plant overhauls
- Report any Health & Safety issues / incidents
Other responsibilities:
- Work on safety critical equipment
- Ensure compliance with relevant statutory requirements particularly, but not limited to, the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Environmental Protection Act
- Develop & review ‘work packs’ within the works management system including work specifications, method statements, risk assessments & technical drawings
- Ability to handle multiple work projects running together as the business need arises
- Proactive and creative approach to fault diagnosis and problem solving
- Participate in the implementation of the Company Safety Rules as either Competent Person or Authorised Person (in accordance with development matrix), to ensure that General Safety is achieved
- Undertake procurement activities within the Company policies and process, including developing technical specifications for work to be carried out
- Ensure correct stock control of any raw materials used during maintenance and correct control of any waste streams. assisting in the management of the controlled waste zone
- Ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained on plant

The role will occasionally involve some working at height, work within in confined spaces, and work with PPE required when working with chemicals. Specific training will be provided for these aspects of the role.

The training you will be getting
Maintenance and operations engineering technician level 3.
Engineering technicians in the wider advanced manufacturing and Engineering Sector take responsibility of quality and accuracy within the limits of their personal authority. Demonstrate a core set of behaviours in order to be competent in their job role and complement wider business strategy and development.
The delivery of this Apprenticeship Standard requires day release training at the IPS Training centre/ IPS Rochester workshop (inc. foundation competence units) AND 4 days attending your apprenticeship in the workplace, completing practical skills and studying the Technical Certificate, until you are ready for End Point Assessment in Year 3. The Apprentice will continue to receive regular training contact with IPS all throughout the programme.
Core Knowledge:
A Technician will understand:
- First principles relating to the operation and maintenance of appropriate plant and equipment
- Relevant industry health and safety standards, regulations, and environmental and regulatory requirements
- Maintenance and operational practices, processes and procedures covering a range of plant and equipment
- The relevant engineering theories and principles relative to their occupation
Core Skills:
A Technician will apply their knowledge of plant and systems to safely perform maintenance and operational activities with minimum supervision. This will require them to:
- Comply with industry health, safety and environmental working practices and regulations
- Locate, and rectify faults on plant and equipment
- Communicate with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal role and responsibilities
- Read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation
- Prepare work areas to undertake work related activities and reinstate those areas after the completion of the work-related activities
- Inspect and maintain appropriate plant and equipment to meet operational requirements
- Assess and test the performance and condition of plant and equipment, and communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification
Successful achievement of the end-point assessment will lead to final certification of the apprenticeship.
