Starting salary range: £58,501 - £65,000
Location: London – EC4Y 8EE (Hybrid)
Contract: 12 months fixed-term contract (maternity cover)
Job purpose
To direct and control BSR operations in line with BSR strategy and mission. Working closely with the Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees, the Chief Operating Officer will ensure BSR has the resources, infrastructure and working environment to meet its annual plans, long-term aims, and delivers high impact activities. The Chief Operating Officer leads the long-term strategic approach to organisational development, finances and people and will be a champion for innovation within the organisation. The role includes overseeing the provision of high-quality membership services, alongside other responsibilities such as leadership of the governance, finance, human resources, business support and facilities function. The Chief Operating Officer also acts as deputy CEO.
Main Responsibilities
1. To direct and control BSR operations in line with BSR strategy and mission
- Working in partnership with the CEO and BSR Board of Trustees to ensure BSR has the resources in place to achieve its goals and deliver high impact activity.
- Apply advanced business planning processes, coaching and leading Heads of Department to create short-term deliverable plans and develop longer-term plans for their business area
- Lead the advancement of performance metric across BSR and provide Board-level analysis detailing progress and impact
- Analyse internal operations and identify areas for process enhancement/systems management
- Build relationships with key Board and committee members and assume lead responsibility for the Finance and Risk Committee.
2. To drive and champion individual and organisational development
- Monitor and develop our organisational culture, championing BSR’s values at every opportunity
- Continue to develop our high trust, high accountability model of high performance
- Empower staff and teams to actively inform the direction of BSR and our activities
- Deliver our equality, diversity and inclusion strategy, evaluating progress against key metrics
3. To lead the People and Resources directorate
- Deliver our ambitious membership strategy to support sustained growth, identifying new opportunities to develop our offer
- Ensure the society fulfils its duties and responsibilities in relation to governance and finance, including the delivery of the annual financial audit, financial statements and annual report
- Oversee the robust management of risk, data protection, and health and safety compliance
- To be a director of the Society’s trading subsidiary, BSR Enterprises Ltd
- Lead and support the team, including through the identification and delivery of professional development opportunities and role-modelling BSR values
- Establish objectives linked to our strategic priorities, monitoring and holding colleagues to account for delivery
- Share key updates with the team on a regular basis and champion the department’s work internally.
4. To be an active member of the Senior Management Team (SMT)
- To deputise for the CEO as required
- Provide leadership and support across the organisation, ensuring consistency of operation, high standards of service and driving a one-team approach
- Agree organisation-wide policies and procedures and ensure their correct implementation
- Assume corporate responsibility for trustee and senior management decisions
- Develop evidence-based business cases to secure funding to support key projects
- Work across teams to identify new opportunities to support our members and generate income
- Evaluate our work consistently to identify and deliver improvements
- Champion BSR’s values at every opportunity
Person Specification
Experience
- Significant experience of providing internal operational leadership to ensure BSR is executing its strategy, working towards its mission, and having impact
- Understanding of advanced business planning and regulatory issues
- Ability to lead organisational development that creates a resilient organisation and values-led working environment
- Ability to lead strategic development, including driving innovation that creates diversification in BSRs activity and income streams
- Experience of financial and people leadership to direct a strategic approach for BSR in these areas.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate impact and inform ongoing drive to improve all aspects of work.
- Excellent facilitation skills to lead activities that drive innovation, strategic development, and a one team approach
- Passion to keep in touch with the latest developments across the charitable and membership sectors so that BSR is always in step or ahead of best practice
- A keen collaborator who motivates and creates the environment for others to work as one team to achieve the organisation’s goals
- Values-led, dynamic leader who can effectively manage and coach staff successfully, supporting them to reach their full potential
Timetable
- The closing date for applications is: Monday 18 March 2024 (9am)
- Interviews and Second-stage conversation are expected to take place from: 26 – 28 March 2024.
- Ideal start date would be by: 15 May 2024
First round interviews will be a panel interview, and the second round for those taken forward will include an opportunity to meet the team members this role will manage.
