Job description

What you will do in your working day

Apprentices working at ETA will be working as part of the team, working to complete the requirements of the L3 Apprentice Fitter (electrical) Standard. To ensure you gain the experience you will:

You will develop technical appreciation of the key aspects of high voltage cable systems and ‘hands-on’ electrical and mechanical engineering skills using a variety of hand and power tools. 

As your skills develop you will have the opportunity to travel worldwide working as part of our service team on site and offshore as well as in our Romsey workshops.  . 

The training you will be getting

Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.

You will also begin a knowledge qualification (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years.

After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills; ultimately leading to your End Point Assessment.

SETA will make regular visits during this period of time to ensure you will covering all the required aspects of the Standard, which includes a practical element, a theory test and a professional discussion, regarding the work achieved with your employer.

These final tests are administered by an independent assessment organisation and take place in the last six months of the apprenticeship.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

The expected progression is to develop power cable and related fibre-optic jointing skills and qualifications to cover fibre cables and power cables from medium voltage (up to 33kV) to extra-high voltage (132kV and above).  Once fully qualified and experienced there will be opportunities to develop further, specialising in testing and commissioning, or in a supervisory role.

Alternative career pathways within the company include technical support and project engineering roles.
