We are looking for a Workshop Technician. As a Workshop Technician, you will carry out diagnostic repairs, vehicle repairs, servicing and MOT repairs to DVSA standards, within our workshop. You will fully comply with all HSE legislation and should be able to assist other staff as required. You will also maintain and develop technical skills as required and work on an extremely wide range of vehicles/plant equipment, including cars, LCV’S, HGV’s & Gritters.
Key responsibilities for a Workshop Fitter / Chargehand:
- To diagnose vehicle faults and specify the correct method of repair and parts to be used, within the defined quality standards, and within the most cost-effective manner.
- To carry out vehicle Inspections/servicing in accordance with the workshop schedule.
- To record job times for the repair on the job card in line with current procedure.
- To ensure parts replaced under warranty are returned, labelled and in a clean condition.
- To ensure all parts are booked using the correct procedure.
- To ensure good housekeeping practices, including general tidiness in the workshop and the return of all tools and equipment to their designated place.
- To carry out routine vehicle examinations using handheld data capture devices, if applicable, in accordance with VOSA testing requirements.
- To attend road vehicle breakdowns.
- To carry out vehicle road testing where necessary to determine specific vehicle defects or following remedial repair.
- To partake in the winter maintenance standby duty rota if required.
- To communicate effectively with fellow colleagues and suppliers
- Ad hoc tasks as required
Success Measures:
- All vehicles to pass MOT tests first time, and any failures to be reported to the Workshops’ Manager immediately.
- Ensure the workshop stock is always managed correctly.
- All equipment is repaired to current legal and company standards.
- Customers are to always be dealt with in a polite, professional and courteous manner.
- All feedback is to be passed to the Workshops Manager.
Skills and Experience:
- Be fully competent with the overhaul and repair of vehicle systems including engines, automatic / semi-automatic gearboxes, drive trains, compressed air systems, hydraulic systems, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, cooling systems and basic auto electrics and training can be given in all areas.
- Be fully competent with the safe operation of workshop equipment including (if applicable) roller brake testers, tracking gauges, hydraulic vehicle lifts, pressurised oil and waste systems, battery chargers and starters, trolley jacks, scaffolding, pressure wash, digital smoke readers, headlamp alignment testers, hydraulic jacks and testing equipment, drilling machines, torque wrenches, pedestal grinders and general portable equipment (i.e. air guns, drills, electric and pneumatic hand tools etc).Be familiar with all relevant diagnostic equipment including hydraulic flow meters, air and vacuum gauges, multi meters, temperature gauges, micrometres, engine and gearbox laptop testing equipment.
- Have basic skills in gas and electric welding, burning and basic body repairs.
- Attend vehicle manufacturer product training courses, VOSA vehicle inspection training and vehicle recovery training as required.
- HGV / PSV licence
