Job description

There is an opportunity for a motivated individual to join the ENT department and the skull base team at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust.

The skull base team at The Wessex Neurological Centre, Southampton acts as a regional centre for the large catchment population of Wessex (approximately 3.5 Million) and is one of the largest in the country. The National Vestibular Schwannoma Registry has shown it to be the 5th busiest in the country, with excellent outcomes.

The ENT department is a large department working collaboratively with consultants from Winchester and Salisbury (in a 14 on call rota).

This is a new post and it is open to those who can demonstrate that they received subspecialist training in Otology and Lateral skull base surgery.

The ENT and neurosurgical departments at Southampton have an excellent track record of mentoring and nurturing new consultants, supporting them to develop their surgical/clinical skill further.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The primary focus of the post holder will be the outpatient and surgical management of complex Otology and lateral skull base conditions. The post holder will be a member of the ENT team and of the Skull base team (with colleagues in allied specialties of Neurosurgery, Oncology, OMF surgery, plastics etc). The post is based at principally at Southampton General hospital with some Outpatient clinical activity in the Royal South Hants Hospital.

Responsibilities include the management of in-patients, outpatient clinics, attendance at Multidisciplinary Team (MDTs) meetings, administration, teaching, educational and clinical supervision, service development, participation in the ENT on-call rota, which is shared with, and covers, Winchester Hospital and Salisbury Hospital.

You will be working with internal and external clinicians to grow and develop the model of care across the region to ensure the service is responsive to the needs of the local and regional population.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Applicants should be strongly motivated to work in a teaching hospital and should be prepared to take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and clinical management. We also offer excellent personal development and research opportunities.

Applicants should have a CCT and be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT/CESR may also apply. The candidate should be able to demonstrate that they have received training in Otology and lateral skull base surgery such as having undertaken a period of Fellowship training.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.
