PCB Layout Design Engineer - Stoke on Trent
Location
Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire | United Kingdom
Job description
Overview
Rapiscan Systems is an industry leader in detection technology, providing cargo and vehicle inspection systems and services for ports, borders, military, high-threat facilities, and checkpoints to help customers combat terrorism, drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud. We offer a broad array of scanning system configurations that leverage low-, medium-, and high-energy X-ray technology—or multiple X-ray technologies—to address each customer’s unique security application requirements. Our commitment to excellence in imaging performance, innovative design, and uncompromising quality ensures our solutions consistently deliver best-in-class imaging, high reliability, and operator satisfaction, to help customers find threats and contraband with ease and confidence.
Role Overview
Working within the Cargo and Vehicle Inspection section of Rapiscan Systems Engineering team. As part of our team, the PCB Layout Design Engineer will be involved in projects at all stages of the product lifecycle, from initial concept generation, new product introduction through to design delivery and continuous improvement in manufacture. Rapiscan’s products use proprietary data acquisition systems based on modern electronic components and techniques. Joining the hardware design team, this role is responsible for the design and implementation of next generation core technology for data acquisition within the Cargo Division.
Responsibilities This role is required to bring the PCB layout of electronic designs in-house, removing the dependency on outside resource which is costly and time consuming. This role is not to be confused with that of an electronics design engineer; the PCB layout discipline requires specific knowledge of both the PCB manufacturing and the component assembly processes. The position is best suited to an individual working closely with the manufacturing and assembly team, in so doing allowing the electronics design engineer to focus more closely on the detail of the design solution.
- Become the schematic capture and PCB librarian to define, create, and maintain component library shapes, symbols and PCB layouts for new designs across the company.
- Significant mechanical engineering experience in previous positions to understand the integration of the PCB design into the broader product platform.
- Parasitic circuit-board design (and possible simulation) based upon requirements set out by design engineer.
- Liaising with external PCB manufacturers and external subcontract manufacturers.
- Liaising with PCB assembly engineers from our sister-company (OSI-E) to optimize layout for manufacturing cost and efficiency.
- Examining obsolescence and board optimisation for large scale production.
- Working with subcomponent selection from a variety of vendors.
- Component consolidation.
- Developing a preferred parts list - a Catalogue of components that the electronics design engineer uses first. Using another device requires approval from the relevant design authority.
- Work collaboratively with the OSI-E manufacturing engineers to bring to manufacture designs and concepts from the Rapiscan Electronics Design department.
- Proficient in the use of Altium Designer as the main software tool for design work.
- Assist with design for manufacture.
Using your skills and experience in PCB design you will:
- Design PCB circuit boards to meet the needs of a product requirement.
- You will consider layout to optimise heat management and EMC.
- You will produce all the documentation needed to get your PCB manufactured.
- You will work closely with colleagues working in PCB manufacture to optimise and realise your design.
- Be responsible for the quality of your work and work in accordance with procedures, policies and responsibilities common across OSI and Rapiscan Systems.
Qualifications A sound understanding of Multilayer PCB design and layout.
Experience of using ECAD design software such as Altium.
be desirable if you have:
- Work experience in a manufacture PCB design or an electronic test environment.
- Experience of designing and building your own electronic projects.
- A sound understanding of electronics principles and fundamentals.
- Typically, 5+yrs experience with PCB (PC Board, printed circuit board) high speed digital, analogue, RF and switch mode power supply design layout and impedance control; PCB Fabrication IPC-6011/6012D, PCB Assembly J-STD-001F and IPC-A-610F (Class 2&3)
Other key attributes:
- Excellent verbal and written communicator able to converse effectively with specialist teams.
- A flexible engineer able to pick up new ideas and tools quickly, to work under pressure both independently and within a small and dynamic team.
- Ability to give and take instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently and cross functionally with excellent organisation and time management skills.
- Punctuality and reliability.
- Prepared to take responsibility for self and others.
Qualifications:
- A relevant qualification such as HND, HNC or equivalent in Electronic Engineering, although graduates with relevant industrial experience will be considered. If interested in this position, please apply using the contact details below.
