Job description

About the Pub

The Black Friar is a traditional town centre pub with a great reputation for its friendly atmosphere and its entertainment offer. It has an open plan trading area, with a fantastic characterful bar servery, wood panelled flooring, stained glass windows, an open fire, beamed ceilings and local bric-a-brac providing character. The large bar servery is a focal point of the pub and is conveniently positioned towards the centre of the room, hosting several cask ale pumps as well as a number of leading brands. The back bar is well-stocked with optics and there is plenty of space for merchandising. Fixed benched seating, loose tables and chairs, and bar stools can accommodate up to 50 guests altogether. There is also plenty of standing room and this is particularly useful when the popular entertainment is in full swing, which currently includes a Saturday night DJ and regular open mic nights. This activity is well supported by a speaker system throughout the pub and there is also a television in the lounge. To the side of the pub is a lawned garden with picnic benches for around 30 guests, and there is also a smoking solution to the rear.

Regional Manager's Thoughts

With its traditional high street location, a great range of cask ales and weekly entertainment, the Black Friar is a pub for the purist! This is a great opportunity for a new starter to the trade, who is business-focussed, and wants to provide a warm welcome to the passing trade, and regulars.

Surrounding Area

The Black Friar is located at the bottom end of the High Street in Newcastle-under-Lyme, and this pedestrianised area also hosts the centuries old market, with over 80 stalls. The pub benefits from a weekend circuit trade and also from a fantastic reputation for hosting entertainment. There are a number of theatres within a few miles of the property, and Newcastle Town FC is under a mile away.
