Genome research Limited (“GRL”) operates as the Wellcome Sanger Institute and is a wholly-owned charitable subsidiary of the Wellcome Trust, its primary funder. It was founded in 1993 as the Sanger Centre and played a leading role in the Human Genome Project. We are an open and collaborative organisation that believes in sharing our data, results, tools and technologies across the world to advance science. Our findings are used to improve health and to understand life on Earth. Our highly specialist work is delivered by more than 1,000 people, including some of the most respected scientists in their field in the world.
This is an exciting time in the development of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, particularly given the recent appointment of Matt Hurles as the new Institute Director , organisational change and Wellcome’s plans to expand the campus into a world-leading hub for genomics and biodata.
It is critical to have the right balance of membership on the GRL Board of Directors, which can bring an external perspective and experience to the organisation in order to consider opportunities, guide, inform thinking and challenge the executive to ensure that the Wellcome Sanger Institute continues to be successful. We are looking for an experienced senior financial leader, a fully qualified accountant with non-executive experience, who brings CFO/FD experience and deep understanding of internal controls, operational resilience and strong governance. A successful candidate could come from the public, not-for-profit or commercial sectors but will be expected to contribute to strategic thinking, and to bring enthusiasm, creativity and independent judgement to a wide variety of topics. Comfortable with ambiguity, your communication, interpersonal and influencing skills will be second to none.
The Board has 8 meetings per year, that typically last at least half a day and often up to a full day. Meetings are usually hybrid and thus remote attendance is accommodated, but in-person meetings and wider engagement is encouraged.
We are committed and keen to ensure that we attract the widest and most diverse group of individuals onto our board. For more information and to apply for this role please click Apply.
