Job description
SCAS IPC are looking to recruit a Specialist IPC Practitioner to support the delivery of the Infection Prevention and Control agenda across the SCAS footprint
Working closely with the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Lead, the post holder will be required to ensure that the Trust is compliant locally with the legal and statutory requirements in relation to IPC and to provide evidence of such compliance, providing specialist training in IPC by means of roadshows, induction, ANTT, hand hygiene, PPE etc.
The post holder will be required to provide expert and specialist knowledge in relation to IPC to Heads of Operations and Team Leaders, monitoring and analysing trends and statistics and developing action plans for improvement with the local teams.
The post holder will be expected to lead locally on the review and auditing of the Trusts IPC practices, analysing and supporting practice and assist in the implementation of recommendations in line with national legislation and guidelines, working independently and self-directing.
Working with Heads of Operations to facilitate links with Acute Trusts, Commissioners and economy wide IPC groups to provide and receive complex information and raise awareness for managers and staff in infection prevention and control measures and audit to enhance personal confidence, support CPD and improve organisational capability and resilience.
Key responsibilities:
The Specialist Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner will support the Infection Prevention and Control Lead in the delivery of the Trust Infection Prevention and Control Annual work programme.
The post holder (s) will be responsible for maintaining and proactively promoting the IPC agenda bespoke to the service areas of 999, Patient Transport Services and Clinical Co-ordination centres
Key areas of the role include:
• Delivering the IPC assurance audit programme
• Delivering the IPC training programme
• Supporting the IPC link practitioners in their development and promotion of excellent IPC practice in local areas

South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of emergency, urgent care and non-emergency healthcare services, along with commercial logistics services.
The Trust delivers most of these services to the populations of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire as well as non-emergency patient transport services in Surrey and Sussex.
We serve a population of over 7 million and answer over 500,000 urgent calls a year. We employ 4,551 staff who, together with over 1,100 volunteers, enable us to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
1. Take responsibility Trust wide to ensure compliance with the Health and Social Care Act (2015) and DH Standards for Ambulance Trusts 2008 are delivered alongside the acute and secondary care providers with developments that meet all targets.
2. Work with South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust managers and staff to ensure policies and procedures are understood, facilitate with Clinical Operations Managers to ensure that policies are audited with clear action plans and developments fed through to the Trusts Patient Safety group and into the economy groups.
3. Working closely with the IPC Lead/Lead Medic/DIPC to support the development of the long-term Infection Prevention & Control Strategies and Annual Infection Prevention and Control Programme
4. Working alongside the IPC Lead to maintain compliance with the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (rev 2015) – Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance to maintain registration and all relevant CQC fundamental standards and ensuring that the infection prevention and control service demonstrates the qualities of a well led service.
5. Working alongside the IPC Lead agree antibiotic formularies to match secondary care and joint antibiotic prescribing audits and action plans with the Trusts Pharmacy Advisor.
6. Improve local communication and compliance against the Health and Social Care Act DoH Ambulance Standards and with the cleaning leads, National Cleaning standards for Ambulance Trusts.
7. Improve working relationships and opportunities for future development work across the economy.
8. Keeping up to date with and contributing to, research and development, often in collaboration with trust managers and clinicians and colleagues in relation to IPC.
9. Working directly with ambulance crews identifying good practice and areas of development.
10. Provide specialist training to staff in IPC by means of roadshows, induction, ANTT, hand hygiene, PPE etc.
11. To liaise closely with the Operations Directorate to ensure that the principles of national guidance are embedded into practical patient care provided by the Trust, highlighting areas of potential risk and developing strategies which when implemented will minimise the Trusts exposure to such risk.
12. To maintain a recognisable profile in the Trust through station/department visits and to take part in and to participate pro- actively in Trust communication events.

To develop and maintain strong working relationships with all directorates of the Trust, in particular Operations, Governance & Risk and Education, ensuring that the department maintains active, open and robust lines of communication between the departments of the Trust, to ensure high standards of performance.
14. To ensure that the Trust’s policies in relation to Equality and Diversity are central to the working ethos of all staff.
15. Providing expert, specialised advice on all matters relating to infection prevention and control
16. Ensuring that all clinical governance processes are in place for the infection prevention and control service, including leading on regular and annual reporting, verifying specific data relating to infection prevention and control and ensuring that all policies are up to date.
17. To represent the trust and deputise for the IPC Lead/Lead Medic/DIPC at strategic and operational meetings internally and externally for infection prevention and control and issues.
18. Provide expert infection prevention and control advice on new and refurbishment building projects in the Trust.
19. Develop and review infection prevention and control policies and procedures specific to the Trust with other members of the Infection Prevention and Control Team in line with legislation and ensure that assurance frameworks are in place to monitor compliance.
20. Ensure robust systems are in place and suitable evidence is available to provide assurance on infection prevention and control.
21. Ensure that infection prevention and control programmes of continuous education are provided in line with the needs of the Trust and current national legislation.
22. Provide bespoke support and education to the IPC link practitioners across the organisation.
