Bethphage

Job description

What is a Trustee?

As a charity, we have a volunteer board of Trustees who bring their own individual areas of expertise to benefit the organisation. Among the many skills they have are business development, financial management; charity governance, staff development, performance management, local government, disability service development and adult social care.

Bethphage’s Vision is of inclusive communities where all people can live the life they choose.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the governance and strategic direction of an organisation. Bethphage employs a professional Executive Management Team (EMT) who manage the charity day to day. Assisting the board since 2019 is our founder and former Trustee, Donna Werner who was named our Honorary President and still joins meetings via video conference from the US.

The Role of a Trustee

The Trustees work closely with the EMT on the strategic direction of the business. They coordinate and attend quarterly board meetings, through which they review the work of the charity and provide advice, support and focus attention onto the areas that the EMT needs to consider and prepare for. The Trustees strive to continuously improve what we do and respond to the changing environment in which Bethphage operates.

Bethphage is a values-based charitable business, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in the community. The charity also needs to make a modest financial surplus to remain viable. The role of a Trustee is to be a critical friend to the management team, lending expertise and experience to help guide the organisation in achieving its aims and sometimes competing objectives. Some of our board members have been a part of Bethphage for many years, you will be joining a supportive, friendly, and collegial team that will help you develop, train and grow your role as a Trustee. Trustees can expect to thoroughly enjoy the role and will find it is a very rewarding experience. The Trustees work on a voluntary (unpaid) capacity for the benefit of the charity, this usually equates to three days per quarter. All Trustees are required to undergo a DBS check (Disclosure & Barring service).

Currently, we are particularly interested in hearing from people with financial and/or legal experience and expertise and from people with experience of living with a disability.

About Bethphage

Bethphage is a charitable and specialist provider of support for adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs across Shropshire and the West Midlands. We also provide the Shared Lives service in Shropshire on behalf of Shropshire Council.
