About the role

Are you an experienced Senior Curator and a specialist in photography? Do you have experience of mounting exhibitions, conducting original research, and publishing on the history of photography? Are you actively engaged in widening access to photography and making it more inclusive? Then we want to hear from you.

This position is an ideal opportunity for an established Senior Curator to be part of our enthusiastic and dedicated team within Collection & Research. You’ll work across all four of our amazing Galleries based in the heart of Edinburgh.

In this role you will be researching, managing, and helping to use and share our exciting and extensive photography collection and related archives for our audiences. You’ll also represent the organisation at conferences / seminars. You’ll be responsible for our world-class collection of 55,000+ photographs and its growth in areas that fulfil our commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

You’re likely to have a wide network of contacts as well as experience in competing and securing funding through philanthropy and public grant-giving bodies. You must also have exhibition and publication experience with excellent communication skills.

The difference you’ll make

Reporting to the Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Portraiture your responsibilities will include:

- Initiating and developing ideas and proposals for the public programme of exhibitions, displays, and talks in consultation with colleagues.

- Writing in-gallery and online interpretation about the collection for our focus audiences.

- Researching, organising and project managing exhibitions, displays and other relevant initiatives, with budgetary responsibility.

- Sharing information on the collection with our audiences and partners. You’ll answer research enquiries, facilitate and supervise public research visits and contribute to our Learning and Engagement programme by delivering talks and tours and developing digital content.

- Being responsible for the photography collection of the NGS collection and identifying research opportunities and delivering research outputs in alignment with our Research Framework.

- Proposing acquisitions (including loans in), recommending loans out and maintaining accurate catalogue records and relevant data.

- You will have supervisor or line management responsibilities for other curators and researchers.

- Liaising with collection management colleagues to ensure the highest standards of care and protection for the NGS collection.

- Contributing to NGS partnership initiatives, national and international as well as to learning and engagement and other programmes across NGS.

- Collaborating with other NGS departments and contributing to the audience framework plans, in line with the overall NGS vision of broadening access to the collection.

- Developing and maintaining a wide network of contacts and stakeholders, including artists, lenders, donors, other museums, public institutions, universities, gallery professionals etc.


Who we are looking for

To succeed in this role, you’ll need the following range of knowledge, skills, and experience:

- Extensive experience in the wider curatorial community with a demonstrable reputation.

- Excellent research skills and some evidence of outputs (publications/exhibitions etc.)

- An evolving reputation in the sector for a specialism relevant to the NGS collection.

- A degree or equivalent in art history or a related discipline.

- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate with colleagues and stakeholders in an exemplary manner.

- Experience of budget management.

- Excellent organisational skills (time management, project management etc.).

- An ability to work in a collegiate manner, aligning activity with organisational priorities.

It would also be great if you have:

- Line management experience.

- A network of relevant contacts.

- A knowledge of the art market. 

- A knowledge of practices in other spheres relevant to the area of specialism (conservation, new media etc.).
