About the Opportunity

Jacobs are offering a rare opportunity to develop an individual in the field of nuclear severe accidents and modelling. This discipline focuses on the mechanical degradation of the core, the physics of heat transfer and fluid mechanics, the chemistry of molten core materials and the radiological consequences of such an event. The role is ideal for candidates who enjoy a technical challenge with opportunity for innovation.

The role will be heavily focused on the MELCOR severe accident modelling code, which will be applied to nuclear power plant modelling and software testing. The candidate will work as part of a team supporting the development and assessment of submarine nuclear propulsion systems and may be asked to carry out independent assessment of analyses carried out by other parties.

The key objectives of the role are:

• Develop MELCOR input files for novel and advanced situations.
• Run simulations under rigorous QA arrangements.
• Use coding skills to maintain and develop Jacobs’ software verification systems.
• Undertake detailed analysis of the results of calculational simulations.
• Deduce and report the capabilities of the code when applied to novel situations.
• Troubleshoot and resolve calculational issues.
• Demonstrate a personal rigor in software testing and calculational scrutiny.
• Provide a critical and proportionate assessment of analysis carried out by others.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• A bachelor degree (or higher) in physics, engineering or a similar relevant subject. A first class bachelor degree would be preferred but lower classifications would be considered if one or more post-graduate qualifications are held with high attainment.
• Applicants must be UK nationals and will need to obtain security clearance to SC level before commencing in the role.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written English.
• Good initiative, positive attitude, and an ability to learn quickly.
• Good interpersonal skills, to work as part of a team.
• An understanding of the physics principles of how light water reactors (LWRs) work and a basic knowledge of key power plant components.
• Strong coding background, with experience in Python and Fortran desirable.
• We are open to take on candidates who are inexperienced in the field of severe accidents. We will offer the opportunity for the candidate to receive specialist training to develop their role. However, a candidate who already has any relevant knowledge, skills and experiences will be at an advantage.

You required to hold full UK Citizenship as security clearance to at least SC will be required to undertake the role.
