Job Role:
We seek to appoint an exceptionally high-calibre teacher, with superb subject knowledge to stimulate, inspire and challenge our high-achieving girls and who is prepared to give full commitment to the aims and ethos of the Science Department and to Guildford High School. The successful candidate should have a warm, friendly and supportive teaching style to nurture the pupils’ interest in Physics. We are a very successful team looking for someone who can work collaboratively, helping us strive to continue to improve our already outstanding teaching, generating new ideas and initiatives to benefit our pupils.
Science Department
The Science Department comprises Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science, which are taught throughout the School, and Psychology, which is taught at A-level only. The Department has an excellent record of academic success at IGCSE, A Level and Oxbridge entry. Over half of our Sixth Form pupils choose one or more science subjects at A Level, with around 20-25 pupils each year choosing to study A Level Physics. We follow the AQA A-level specification Physics. Edexcel GCSE Astronomy is also offered as an enrichment course in the Sixth Form. Each year a significant number of pupils go on to study degree courses in Physics, Engineering and Natural Sciences.
All pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects from Year 7 and are taught by subject specialists. Years 7 and 8 follow our own bespoke curriculum, which develops practical and investigative skills as well as providing a solid foundation for IGSCE. In Year 9, pupils start the Edexcel IGCSE course, following a scheme of work suitable for progression to either Double Award Science or Physics IGCSE. In Year 10 the pupils choose either Double Award Science or the three separate sciences. Science is popular at Guildford High School and the majority of pupils opt for separate sciences.
The Science facilities are excellent. There are 12 spacious, modern and well-equipped laboratories, all with interactive screens, and four preparation rooms. Three of the laboratories and one of the preparation rooms are used by the Physics Department, and we have a dedicated Physics technician. We also have use of the dedicated Sixth Form Laboratory. There are currently five members of the Physics Department, several of whom have other roles within school.
Numerous STEM clubs are run by the Science Department including Year 7 Science club, CREST projects, Research in School projects, CANSAT, robotics, and reading groups. To enrich our students academically we take them to relevant public lectures, and they achieve highly at all levels in the Physics Olympiad competitions. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to these initiatives or to develop new ones.
This is not intended to be exhaustive and the post holder may perform any other duties reasonably required by the Head.
