Applications are invited for the post of substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with interest in Retina at Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust. The Ophthalmology Department at Epsom and St Helier has a well established and highly performing team treating a broad range of Ophthalmology conditions. The successful applicant will join a team of Consultants, Specialist and Specialty Doctors, Fellows, Trainees, specialist nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, HCAs, technicians and a dedicated admin team including a diabetic failsafe officer and an injection service failsafe officer. The post holder will be required to work across both sites and the role may change depending on service needs. This post includes one cataract surgery list per week with the potential for extra lists, due to the recent opening of an additional ophthalmic theatre. The post holder will join the SWL regional ophthalmic out of hours consultant on call rota, arranged through Moorfields at St Georges. This post is for a full time substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in retina. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and surgical/laser management of patients attending retina/ AMD clinics and the acute eye service. The clinical team is supported by specialist nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, HCAs, technicians and a dedicated admin team including a diabetic failsafe officer. The post includes one cataract surgery list per week with the potential for regular additional theatre lists. The post holder will be on the SWL regional ophthalmic out of hours consultant on call rota, arranged through Moorfields at St Georges. This is defined as a Category B on call; this applies where the consultant can typically respond by giving telephone advice and by returning to work later, except in an unforeseen emergency. The on call duration is one week and the frequency is 2 per annum. Both hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics). We also play an active role in the local healthcare economy, and are the lead provider in two innovative health and care partnerships, Surrey Downs Health and Care and Sutton Health and Care. Responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and surgical/laser management of patients attending retina/ AMD clinics and the acute eye service, the post holder will have a shared responsibility for managing approximately 16000 retinal outpatient appointments per year, including around 6000 intra-vitreal injections, along with 3 other retina consultants and 1.3 WTE VR consultants, fellows, trainees, optometrists, specialist nurses and technicians. The trust has two dedicated ophthalmology outpatient units and the post holder will be required to work across both sites, as well as joining the SWL regional out of hours on call rota.
