Job description
We are currently recruiting for an Scientific Officer based in Lisburn. The successful candidates will be required to start once the vetting paperwork, ANI clearance has been completed.
Start date: ASAP
Duration: Start Date 01/4/2024 – 26 weeks (ending 27 September 2024)
Rate of pay: £15.21
Hours of work: 37 hours a week 9 to 5 Monday to Friday
Main Duties;
The ScO post holders will join a small team of microbiologists responsible for the analysis of bathing water quality samples and the reporting of results to the DAERA Marine Strategy and Licensing Team for onward processing to the local councils and bathing beach operators.
The ScO post holders will support the work of the existing team by providing a sampling service at designated Northern Ireland bathing waters during the bathing water season. There will be a team of four samplers, two to cover the North Antrim beaches and two to cover the Co. Down beaches. Two staff will also assist with the laboratory analysis of water samples.
The post holders will be expected to work to a clearly defined sampling schedule which will involve visiting a number of beaches on a prescribed day and collecting samples for return to the laboratory for analysis.
Samplers will take part in pollution investigations in the event of samples failing to meet quality standards. Pollution incidents are required to be assessed and investigated working closely with NIEA regulatory teams. All sampling and analyses are to be carried out according to required standards.
Staff will be expected to be able to drive as they will have access to a vehicle supplied for their field duties. Staff will also be required to work in and near water.

Experience required is as per the Protocol:
• 4 GCE/GCSE ‘O’ Levels, grades A-C, in separated subjects. These must include English, Mathematics and a science subject; and
• This may include 1 year’s practical experience of working in a field appropriate to the business area where the opportunity exists. Experience may be gained in academic/voluntary or work-related fields.
Candidates must also have a valid driving licence and be prepared to regularly travel throughout Northern Ireland to collect water samples.
Experience in environmental sciences would be advantageous as would microbiological laboratory experience for those involved with sample processing and analysis.
Desirable Criteria:
A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an Executive Officer role
Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Excellent communication skills.
Proven ability to use own initiative.
Ability to manage and motivate people
Enthusiastic and self-motivated individual with great
interpersonal skills
