Associate Landscape/Ecological Restoration Designer

The Associate Landscape/ Ecological Restoration Designer (ARD) producesdocumentation for land management programs and restoration projects. The ARDensures that all documentation is conducted within the parameters of the workorders to meet client needs and regulatory requirements and is consistent withWED's mission and guiding principles.

Location(s):

• Orleans, MA.
• Hanover MA. ARDs will be expected to travel, as needed, to Orleans incompany vehicles during the workday, particularly during the orientationand training period as a new employee.

The ARD’S DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Conduct research, complete thorough and detailed site analysis evaluations,perform associated fieldwork and document field investigations in written,verbal and graphic form;
• Accurately draft detailed plans, design documents and drawings in writtenand graphic form, including Land Management Plans, Restoration Plans, siteprogramming diagrams, illustrative sketches, diagrams, sections, as well asconstruction sections and details;
• Determine area calculations and material takeoffs for the purposes ofdrafting land management estimates and proposals as directed by theRestoration Designer, Project Managers and senior staff;
• Research project background and requirements (gather and analyze GISdata, historic land use patterns, deed and regulatory research, andsupporting scientific documentation);
• Assist in the preparation of cost estimates;
• Conduct thorough site analysis including, but not limited to collect, analyzeand identify soil and plant samples;
• Prepare presentation plans and graphics;
• Communicate with clients, co-workers, and design team partners;
• Monitor project progress by visiting to job sites in various stages ofcompletion;
• Attend local conservation commission or other regulatory meetings withpotential of presenting;
• Keep all project files current and organized under WED filing system.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, NaturalResources Management or related field preferred coupled with 1+ year ofrelevant design experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture,Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management or related fieldpreferred coupled with 2+ years of relevant design experience OR HighSchool Diploma/GED coupled with 5+ years of relevant design experience
• Knowledge of invasive plant species and control/management techniquesand Cape Cod native plant communities
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite
• Experience with Rhino 3ds, ArcGIS, GPS
• Familiarity with Sage CRM/CRE a plus
• Exceptional interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
• Team-player with demonstrated relationship building skills
• Self-directed with demonstrated time management, strategic thinking andplanning skills
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
• Valid Driver’s License
• MA Pesticide License/Certification (to be acquired within 60 days of hire)
• MA Invasive Plant Certificate (to be acquired withing 18 months of hire)
• Work schedules will vary. Candidates must be willing to work schedulesduring our operating hours, beginning at 8am. Work schedules may alsoinclude occasional evenings and weekends. Specific information will beprovided during interviews

The Coastal Geologist serves as a technical resource on coastal processes and hazards (including impacts ofclimate change on coastal systems), shoreline erosion and erosion management, coastal flooding, communityresilience planning, coastal structural, landscape bioengineering, and conducting coastal resource areadelineations for a range of partners in the coastal areas of New England. The position focuses on technicalaspects and design of bioengineering and nature-based solutions and best practices to the resiliencechallenges coastal communities confront.

Responsibilities

• Applies a high level of technical expertise in coastal geology and coastal processes to ecological restoration andenvironmental permitting to ensure that WED consistently produces the highest quality of work. Thisincludes performing all work in a manner that is based on current scientific findings, scientifically defensiblearguments, and techniques related to professional land management and ecological restoration, which formthe basis of WED recommendations, design, and operations.
• Conducts coastal resources area delineations of coastal dunes, coastal banks, coastal beaches andrelated coastal resource areas for WED projects as well as for other commercial partners where coastalresource areas and coastal geology consulting is required.
• Delivers technical assistance related to coastal processes and hazards, erosion control and management,coastal structures and infrastructure, engineering and the operation, management, development, andrestoration of coastal ecosystems.
• Identifies and delivers technical support to the Wilkinson Ecological Design (WED) team, regulatoryagencies and other professionals using a variety of delivery mechanisms including written materials,digital media, presentations, meetings and workshops, site visits and individual consultations.
• Helps identify peer-reviewed studies, related scientific literature and design studies to fill informationgaps and identify funding sources to facilitate these efforts.
• Participates with WED senior leaders in the company’s prompt response to new project leads relating tocoastal erosion, salt marsh restoration and flood damage prevention. Attends initial meetings withpotential clients to assess the needs of the client and develop customer service plans and continues asa project team member with projects through the design, permitting, implementation andmonitoring phases of projects.
• Collaborates with the design staff to develop design plans and project strategies within the parameters ofthe consulting contracts. Projects are designed to achieve client goals, meet regulatory requirements, andbe consistent with WED’s mission statement and guiding principles of meaningful ecological restoration.
• Networks and serves as the liaison for commercial clients who retain WED as a Business to Business subcontractoras well as with other professionals to secure new project opportunities and expand our professionalnetwork of business referrals.
• Leads presentations on behalf of clients and in collaboration with the project team at regulatory reviewmeetings (primarily local-level Conservation Commission public hearings) for the purpose of discussing thetechnical aspects, ecological benefits and services, implementation approach and regulatory compliance ofWED-developed projects.
• Contributes technical information for project estimates and proposals prepared by estimating staff. Regularlyupdates the Management Team regarding coastal project information, proposal development, status updates,regulatory compliance, and client satisfaction.
• Regularly oversees a series of high-profile projects in all phases of design and construction.
• Conducts site inspections to monitor work progress and environmental compliance in the construction phase.
• Serves as a regulatory expert in the preparation of design documents for permit applications as well asdeveloping resource area delineations. This includes participating in field assessments and reviewing siteanalyses completed by the Restoration Designers and Associate Restoration Designers.
• Develops and maintains professional and collaborative relationships with regulatory review agencyrepresentatives.

Qualifications

• PhD preferred or Master’s degree in Coastal Geology or related field preferred coupled with three years ofrelevant experience or Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Managementor related field preferred coupled with 7+ years of relevant experience. Experience should be in a coastalgeology, coastal processes, flood plain management, or coastal ecological restoration.
• Demonstrated expertise in presenting projects before regulatory compliance review boards seeking projectapprovals preferred.
• Familiarity/Experience with Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, Regulations, and Policies as well as localwetland protection Bylaws and Regulation and local Conservation Commission project review procedures aplus.
• Familiarity with marine construction, ecological restoration and bioengineering construction preferred.
• Knowledge of New England native plant communities and invasive plant species and control/managementtechniques a plus.
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch-up, ArcGIS, GPS preferred.
• Ability to review and understand construction details.
• Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, provide leadership and work respectfully as a team with co-workers.

Experience should be in a coastal geology, flood plain management, ecologicalrestoration project manager or other supervisory role in environmental consulting.
• Demonstrated expertise in presenting projects before regulatory compliance review boards seeking projectapprovals.
• Familiarity/Experience with Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, Regulations, and Policies as well as local wetlandprotection Bylaws and Regulation and local Conservation Commission project review procedures preferred.
