Job description
A leading manufacturer of functional coatings is currently recruiting an R&D Materials Scientist to join their state-of-the-art facility based in West Sussex. This is a pivotal role within a world-class scientific team – developing new light-absorbing coatings whilst having the ability to report technical information back to the customer.
R&D Materials Scientist responsibilities
- Development of new light-absorbing coatings
- Refinement and trouble-shoot existing coatings
- Analysis of chemical, optical, morphological, and mechanical properties of coatings
- Investigations into atypical performances and coating failure mechanisms
- Documentation of laboratory work in a detailed, clear and timely manner
- Oral and written presentation of research results
- Customer focussed development of application processes for specialised applications
- Define coating specifications and limitations
- Maintain high general housekeeping standards
- Uphold a high standard of safety and quality levels
R&D Materials Scientist requirements
- BSc or MSci degree in material science or related subject
- You must possess relevant experience working in the coatings industry – ideally R&D based.
- Excellent oral and written presentation skills
- Experience of working within a laboratory
- Understanding of curing methods and mechanisms of paint components
- Understanding of characterisation and analysis techniques - SEM, FTIR, UV-Vis, TGA, MS
- Demonstrates good computer skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
- Demonstrates good mathematical and literacy skills
- Project planning and time management skills
- Exhibits strong communication and inter-personnel skills
- Motivated and committed team player with good levels of initiative
