Job description

Key responsibilities A flexible clinical and clerical role, that ensures a co-ordinated approach to the pre-operative assessment and the subsequent elective admission of the patient. Administrative and clerical Front of house reception desk management, responding to telephone calls from patients, relatives, outpatient clinics, GPs and other personnel within the trust. Ensuring patient comfort, welcoming them and their relatives/carers to the department. Ensuring patients complete their health screening questionnaire. Ensuring that patients are seen in order by the registered nurse. Directing patients onto relevant departments of the hospital/trust. To negotiate mutually on the PAS, procedure clinic lists and record accurate patient outcomes. Accurate addition of patients to the waiting list, liaising with centralised waiting list office (CWLO) under the instruction of the registered nurse to obtain admission dates where possible. Obtain patients notes manually and via electronic tracker system. Communicate with patients / relatives / Multi-disciplinary team / medical records staff / ambulance control / transport / ward staff / GP / X-ray staff by means of face to face, telephone, email and letter. Order stationary ensuring stock levels are constant and revising levels as required/ ensuring maintenance of office and medical equipment used within the clinic. Management of departmental filing systems Looking up pathology results on the trust intranet Ordering patient information labels Flexible working to ensure reception and the clinic are staffed to meet the needs of the patients attending the department directly from outpatients clinics Maintain and develop knowledge of the whole systems working. Clinical support Measuring blood pressure, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturations, heights and weight, body mass index and recording in the integrated care pathway Recording 12 lead ECG Venepuncture & preparation of samples for haematology Collection and preparation specimens for microbiology Assist in ordering and collection of topical pharmaceutical preparations Chaperone medical staff Manual handling of patients to assist mobilisation on/off treatment couches/wheelchairs To communicate effectively with patients/carers when carrying out clinical procedures. Using explanation motivation and persuasion. Working within department guidelines liaise with CWLO / secretaries to obtain admission dates for those patients requiring minor surgery / investigation under local anaesthesia only and give the correct patient information to those patients Effort Requires concentration throughout working day as patient attendance from out patients clinics may be unpredictable and varied. Highly flexible to meet the varying level of demand from outpatients clinics High level of sensitivity and good interpersonal skills required both face to face and/or on the telephone in dealing with patients who can occasionally by distressed, angry or aggressive Requires dexterity with keyboard/speed/accuracy Significant amount of the working week will be spent using a visual display unit
