Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and self-motivated individual to join the Pre-Operative Assessment Department, as a Specialist Physiotherapist in Pre-habilitation. This role will involve working within a large multi-disciplinary team, as the sole Physiotherapist, providing pre-habilitation advice and support to a wide range of surgical patients.

You will work within two Pre-habilitation Services at CUH; the PRIME Service and Fit 4 Surgery.

The PRIME Service is a highly specialised Clinic, comprising of a large team of Consultant Anaesthetists and Geriatricians, plus Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. The team assess and optimise older adults with frailty prior to undergoing elective surgery. There will be opportunities to work with a variety of Surgical specialities, including Colorectal, HPB, Gynaecology, Urology, Orthopaedics, Plastics and Vascular.

Fit 4 Surgery is a pre-habilitation service aimed at all patients undergoing major surgery at CUH. This team is comprised of specialist Nurses and Consultant Anaesthetists and aims to improve patient fitness before surgery. The team have recently secured funding to expand the service to include digital pre-habilitation to patients.

Main duties of the job

The focus of this role is pre-operative optimisation through pre-habilitation and proactive discharge planning.

You will be part of the PRIME Service; a service which supports and optimises older adults with frailty prior to elective surgery.

You will also be part of the Fit 4 Surgery team; providing physiotherapy input to an optimisation for patients undergoing major surgery.

You should be a recognised expert in the proactive management of pre-operative patients, particularly those with frailty, responsible for providing specialist advice regarding expert rehabilitation and support to, and liaising with, other staff. This includes the provision of specialist education and training for other staff and students.

Responsible for implementing a clearly defined integrated approach to older patients’ care encompassing evidence based care.

Required to undertake research and lead clinical audits in own specialist area, including appropriate dissemination of research findings.

The Pre-assessment Team is a welcoming and dedicated team who are continually striving to deliver excellent care to patients. There is a strong ethos of quality improvement and the opportunity to lead projects. Both Pre-habilitation Services have presented at international and national conferences and there is a strong drive for service improvement and support for continuous professional development.

This opportunity would be suitable for Band 7 or experienced Band 6 Physiotherapists with a strong background in surgery, who wish to specialise in the exciting and rapidly evolving area of pre-habilitation. You will need to have excellent communication and organisational skills and experience of working with a variety of surgical patients.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

Diploma / Degree in Physiotherapy

State Registration

Evidence of relevant post-graduate courses / CPD

Ability to work to MSc standard

Desirable criteria

Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

Relevant validated clinical courses

Involvement in special interest groups, i.e. AGILE, BGS

MSc qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

Substantial postgraduate experience at Band 6 level providing a broad range of experience including respiratory, elderly care, neurological, DME and musculoskeletal conditions

Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy team and/or MDT

Contributing to clinical education of less experienced staff or students or Assistants

Competency to participate in Weekend Service

Desirable criteria

Experience at Band 7 level

Collaborating with Community and Intermediate Care Services

Knowledge

Essential criteria

Substantial knowledge of inpatient physiotherapy

Able to pass on knowledge within formal and informal environments
