We are looking for an energetic, self-motivated Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to work within our Head and Neck team. If you are enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated, then we would love you to join our team at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust. 

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to lead on evidence-based assessment and intervention for patients with head and neck cancers, across the care pathway. You will be a flexible, team-player with proven skills in providing specialist intervention including FEES, videofluoroscopy and/or surgical voice restoration. In addition, you will provide joint team leadership to our team of speech and language therapists and support workers as well as supporting clinical research.

We are a friendly, hard-working team who get together regularly for team meetings, clinical supervision and CPD. We provide a high quality SLT service across three busy acute hospital sites.

Person specification

Qualifications and training

• Hold a diploma/degree in Speech and Language Therapy
• HCPC registration
• Post graduate RCSLT Dysphagia Competencies or equivalent
• Completion of advanced clinical competencies (i.e. videofluoroscopy, tracheostomy, FEES, laryngectomy)
• Further higher or advanced education (e.g. Masters qualification)

Clinical skills and experience

• Highly developed clinical skills and knowledge in the management of laryngectomy including surgical voice replacement.
• Highly developed clinical skills in assessment, therapy and management of patients with communication and swallowing impairments associated with head and neck cancer/treatment
• Experience in the use of FEES for managing patients with head and neck cancers
• Proven ability to effectively provide teaching and training to SLTs, students and other members of the MDT including supporting SLTs to achieve competencies.
• Clinical and non-clinical prioritisation and time-management skills
• Proven skills in leadership
• Highly developed problem-solving, reflection and analytical skills
• Excellent interpersonal as well as written and verbal communication skills including record keeping.
• Proficient computer user (ability to use Microsoft Office package and Trust electronic systems including electronic record keeping)
• Experience in investigating incidents
• Use of FEES for laryngectomy patients including experience of scoping into the oesophagus.
• Experience of participating in clinical research.

Knowledge

• Awareness of relevant professional issues and recent developments in the NHS and Primary Care including clinical governance, NICE and CQC
• Advanced knowledge of the impact of head and neck cancers and their treatments as well as the evidence-base for the management of trismus, communication, swallowing and altered airways in this population.
• Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance

Ability to manage

• Proven experience in team leadership
• Able to support the implementation of local and national agendas for health under the guidance of the Head of Service
• Able to lead on the development of the head and neck SLT service to improve quality of care, efficiency and provide cost-savings where possible.
• Ability to prioritise care delivery in a professional manner, considering Trust policies and procedures
• Able to work independently and organise own work
• Able to cope with change and use initiative
• Ability to provide line management and supervision to junior staff members
• Support the Head of Service in the operational management of the head and neck SLT service.
• Ability to take a lead on supporting national and local agendas for equality, diversity and inclusion
• Masters or higher education in health management or leadership
