Job description:
The University of Manchester and the University of Tokyo are hosting a Dual Award program with a PhD project on Advanced particle tracking and real-time analysis for discoveries at the ATLAS detector at CERN.
The full description of the research project can be found at this link: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/university-of-manchester-university-of-tokyo-dual-award-advanced-particle-tracking-and-real-time-analysis-for-discoveries-at-the-atlas-detector-at-cern/?p169055
The project will last 3 to 3.5 years, of which one year will be spent in Tokyo, one year in LTA at CERN, and up to one year and a half at Manchester.
To be considered for this project you’ll need to complete a formal application through our online application portal.
The application asks for a one or two page statement outlining your motivation to pursue postgraduate research and why you want to undertake postgraduate research at Manchester, any relevant research or work experience, the key findings of your previous research experience, and techniques and skills you’ve developed. This is mandatory for all applicants, and the application will be put on hold without it.
In particular, in this statement you should mention that you are interested in this project, why, and which skills you are bringing to the project making you the right candidate highlighting facts and past experience from your CV. We are also interested in your past involvement and intentions to be involved in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives as this is an important part of our work environment and culture, and you can also highlight your interest and experience in outreach (e.g. talking to schools, to the general public...).
When it asks you for the "how you are supposed to fund this position", you can mention that you will rely on the funding provided within the position, but also you should specify whether you are receiving/will seek support from other scholarships that you know about (this is an added value when looking for PhD position in general).
Letters of reference should be sent as mentioned in the application portal.
After the application closes, we will shortlist a limited number of candidates to interview and the highest-ranked two candidates will be sent forward to the next step of the Dual Award project selection. This is a competitive project across applicants but also across different projects in the same program: even if you are interviewed and selected as the top candidate, the project may not be ranked high enough among other projects to be funded. We expect the interviews to take place in mid-May, and you will have an answer shortly after so that if you are selected and the project is successful, you can begin a PhD in April 2025.
