What you will do in your working day

Under the overall direction of the Head of Department, and in accordance with the practices and procedures of the school, you will be assisting teaching staff in providing safe areas for students and teaching staff. Our Science and Laboratory Technicians provide technical support to the departments, by the preparation of tools, equipment and materials for lessons.

• Preparation and assembly of apparatus and materials for demonstration, class practical work, assessments and examinations
• To prepare solutions and materials
• To assist in maintaining records of apparatus and materials, including inventories and records of breakages
• To pack/unpack and check apparatus and chemicals
• Provide support and assistance to the classroom teacher during practical lessons and in extra-curricular activities
• To ensure that science rooms and equipment are kept clean and tidy in line with regulations
• To be aware of, and to comply with, all departmental / school instructions and procedures relating to health and safety at work
• To assist in the safe disposal of residues and outdated stock following approval and advice from senior personnel

The training you will be getting

Through the training provider, CSR Scientific Training, you will undertake a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship which will include:

• Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 3 Laboratory Technician
• On-the-job competency training
• Theoretical knowledge - BTEC Level 3 Applied Science

The majority of your learning will be completed online once a week with some face-to-face practical sessions / exams in Sutton Coldfield.

Upon successful completion, apprentices can apply for professional registration as a Registered Science Technician, RSciTech, with either the Royal Society of Chemistry or Royal Society of Biology.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

We are looking for someone who would like to gain experience and if you have exceeded expectations throughout the apprenticeship course and there are job vacancies, then we will be looking at long term employment.
