What you will do in your working day

The day’s activities are dependent on the season and will involve all aspects of growing in a public garden, from seed sowing to mulching, pruning trees to cutting flowers. There are a whole variety of other tasks all year round – there’s a lot to do.

Volunteers generally join us three mornings per week with community groups working with us too: It’s a busy space – staff and volunteer gardeners, visitors, impromptu meetings, commercial events, painting, and picnics.

You’ll also work in other areas of the garden too – learning about propagation, growing under glass in our glasshouse and helping out in our 65-acre landscape garden when the team needs it.

The training you will be getting

• Horticulture Operative
• College one day a week
• Functional Skills English and maths level 1
• Emergency first aid at work
• Level 2 award in the safe use of pesticides PA1

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Each apprentice will be given the opportunity to grow within the organisation, our vision is to grow our own qualified staff, and the apprenticeship scheme is one method of achieving this goal.  

During the Apprenticeship scheme, the apprentice will work with a qualified member of staff and be provided the support and guidance required to progress within their career.
