Job description
Clinical1. To undertake structured interviews, psychological assessments (including complex psychometric tests) and observations of individuals and groups, while reflecting on their practice and considering alternative ways of working.2. To develop psychological formulations of clinical problems including the nature, causes and maintaining factors informed by a broad range of potentially conflicting clinical, theoretical and conceptual models and evidence base. To utilise this to inform the development and delivery of care plans, which include psychological treatment and/or management of clients concerns and communicate formulation professionally, sensitively to the person and relevant people.3. To determine appropriate formulation driven psychological intervention, taking into account a range of potentially conflicting clinical information and dynamics with a broad range of client and carer groups and evaluate this accordingly.4. To carry out psychological and psychometric tests, to develop interview and observation skills and to assess needs and eligibility for services.5. To design, implement and modify as appropriate, individualised psychological interventions with clients, carers, families, groups, etc.6. To communicate confidential and personal information concerning ability level and psychological needs, obtained through assessments and interventions, to referring agents and to the client themselves, who may have limited understanding and difficulties with acceptance, and where appropriate to relatives and carers.7. To provide advice and clinically based supervision to carers about care and management of clients problems.8. To assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups.9. To provide emotional support and psychological advice for clients, their carers and families.10. To keep appropriate records of work and inform referrers and relevant others through letters or reports. 11. To work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and where appropriate consult and engage with external agencies including third sector to facilitate intervention at multiple levels.12. To follow a person-focused and evidence-based approach.13. To work in partnership with service users.14. To work in accordance with NHS and placement providers policies and regulations, as well as those of relevant professional bodies.15. To work in a variety of settings including the clients own home, in-patient, 16. Residential and day centre facilities. The post holder will be required to work in a highly emotive atmosphere,17. The post holder will be required to work in situations where there are barriers to acceptance and possible exposure to aggression.18. Receives regular clinical supervision in accordance with BPS and DCOP/BPS Qualification guidelines. Professional1. Special emphasis is placed on personal and professional development activity such as weekly clinical supervision, shadowing, joint working, personal study and reflection. Work is managed and goals agreed and reviewed at intervals; works independently on a day-to-day basis.2. To be familiar with, and abide by, confidentiality and information handling and storage guidelines in accordance with GDPR.3. To cooperate in the use of rooms, books, tests and other equipment needed to carry out duties.4. To attend and participate in administrative and service planning meetings. 5. To practice and conduct themselves in accordance with the BPS code of conduct.6. To abide by the Health Professions Councils Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics. Service Delivery1. Works within a range of health care settings alongside other professionals and agencies including within multi-disciplinary teams and specialised clinical settings.2. Carries out complex psychological assessments sensitively and independently with a broad range of client groups including individual psychometric testing sessions.3. Networks and consults with relevant external agencies such as social services, independent and voluntary sector, to facilitate and enable intervention at multiple levels.4. Undertake administrative tasks in relation to own work and as requested.5. To maintain and promulgate the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society, DCOP/BPS Qualification and Health Board policies and procedures. Leadership1. To engage in service development projects within the MH&LD care group. 2. To work in partnership with colleagues in order to enhance staff confidence and competence in responding to people with complex psychological presentations. Communication1. Communicates in a way which recognises difference and ensures that people feel included and their individual communication needs are met.2. Communications with clients must at all times be safe (appropriate) in content, respectful and made compassionately to minimize anxiety and distress related to their wellbeing.3. Communicates with all professionals, carers and family members involved with the clients care in a way that acknowledges the different contexts and requirements involved in each communication. This will shape the content and process through which this communication is offered e.g. expert knowledge communicated in a professional meeting or empathic understanding with a family member.4. Models behaviour which demonstrates respect for the individual, promotes dignity, equality and diversity and acts in accordance with Equality legislation, policies and procedures. Supervision, Education and Training1. To plan and deliver formal training sessions on psychological aspects of health care to mixed groups of relatives, care staff and other professional staff.2. To provide practical training and supervision to care staff with respect to planned interventions. Information Resources1. To maintain appropriate records of own work, in electronic and hard copy, in line with NHS policies and professional guidelines.2. To maintain relevant administrative systems of own work, electronic and hard copy, in line with relevant guidelines.3. To submit statistical information, activity and quality data of own work as required by the Health Board.4. To use information technology as appropriate, within direct clinical work, research and treatment interventions, including virtual working and in the matter of literature searches, development of training packs and materials. Professional Practice1. To follow UHB policy, advice and ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements.2. To develop knowledge and awareness of and compliance with the legal framework relevant to the placement and service user group.3. To receive regular clinical professional supervision from a Practitioner Psychologist.4. To plan, prioritise own workload, research and individual group sessions in conjunction with Clinical Supervisor and where appropriate, University Tutor.5. To be familiar with and abide by confidentiality and information handling and storage guidelines of CTMUHB and the University.To comply with organisational clinical governance requirements. Research and Development1. To plan, monitor and evaluate own work, using clinical outcomes assessments, small-scale research methodology and statistical procedures.2. To plan and undertake clinical audits or service evaluations, using appropriate methodology and statistical procedures as appropriate, as agreed with the clinical supervisor(s).3. May plan and undertake practice-based research using or developing validated questionnaires.4. To enhance own knowledge of counselling psychology, specific client groups and types of psychological difficulty through reading, literature searches and personal study.5. To comply with the requirements of research governance and evidence-based practice.6. Formal and informal research and development activities designed to inform service development are a major feature of the work
