Job description

Blackheath Prep and Eltham College are seeking to appoint a passionate and committed Grounds Person who is looking for a new opportunity that provides plenty of variety and challenge.

The school’s Grounds Person contributes to the upkeep of the school with a primary focus on the sports field, lawns, shrubbery, paths, and borders across the site. In addition, duties may include setting up events, and escorting contractors. The role will be split across two sites within the Eltham College family of schools - Blackheath Prep (3 days per week) and Eltham College (two days per week).

The successful candidate will possess previous experience of working in a similar role and have a general knowledge of grounds maintenance. They will be able to work independently as well as within a team and possess the ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload, with the ability to stay calm and good-humoured under pressure.

Although not required, previous experience working within the education sector would be advantageous.

Key Duties

- Using appropriate techniques for the care and maintenance of a range of sports surfaces (including all weather pitches) to provide safe, high quality playing surfaces

- Carrying out weekly, monthly and annual maintenance programmes as directed in order to ensure the required standard of surface presentation

- Under supervision, have the ability to use various seed mixes and top dressings for sport surfaces

- Marking out and setting up playing pitches

- Ensuring safe use and operation of equipment and machinery

- Carrying out minor construction and landscaping work

- Assisting with the care and maintenance of garden areas

- Seasonally ensure leaves are cleared and collected, clearing snow and ice and spreading salt/grit during periods of inclement weather across the school site

- Maintaining good relationships with colleagues, students and external users of the site

- Ensuring that appropriate Health and Safety guidelines are observed at all times

- Carrying out any other reasonable requests, in line with the broad responsibilities of the role.

- Occasional overtime work may be required

Terms of Appointment:

- The post is available immediately on a full-time and permanent basis.

- On-site, working Monday to Friday, with occasional lock-up of the school and weekend work.

- Salary is offered at £26,000 per annum.

- Annual leave entitlement is 28 days per year (inclusive of Public Holidays).
