THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF 809 CONNECTED BUSINESSES
Digital and Innovation in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where creative and enterprising people put local residents and businesses first.
Today, Westminster is the most connected borough in London. But, when David joined us in the mid-2010s, small businesses were still struggling to get connected to fibre. Without gigabit-capable broadband, some companies even resorted to biking memory sticks around the city, simply to share files with clients.
Although still in a junior role, David took the initiative and successfully made the business case for £2.8 million of European funding to support connectivity for small businesses across Westminster. Feedback from businesses has been overwhelmingly positive as the project has enhanced their communications with clients. The new connectivity allows them to make video calls and work remotely. As the pandemic hit and many more people needed to work from home, it became clear just how vital this investment had been.
Fast-forward a few years. Westminster is leading the way for connectivity, as a result of the project businesses are thriving, and David is heading up a service of his own responsible for delivery of the Smart City strategy.
As Test Engineer, you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s new Digital and Innovation Directorate. Our focus on users and service design makes us much more than a traditional IT team. Passionate about building products that improve lives, we’re always thinking about the tasks we’re helping our users to accomplish – and the positive impact we can make on how they get things done. At a high-profile Council supporting an exciting city on the world’s stage, you can be sure the work is as varied as it is vital. In our Software Engineer team, you’ll make a difference for users, residents and Council staff alike.
You’ll join us at an exciting time, as we develop new ways of working and create user-centred multidisciplinary teams. If, like us, you’re motivated by working on stuff that matters, then you’ll enjoy scope to help us shape what the team becomes. Your role will span the whole of our Digital and Innovation portfolio, so you’ll enjoy the chance to build lots of great relationships. We’ll look to you to support all kinds of activity – from core IT and tech that keeps the Council running smoothly, to customer and digital services that make lives better, through to our Smart City ambitions to make Westminster undeniably world-class.
You’ll play an enabling role, with the needs of users at the heat of everything you do. Your range of responsibilities will include collaborating with project managers and engineering colleagues to define test plans and strategies. Crafting detailed test cases based on user stories. Using languages such as Gherkin to identify acceptance criteria, and tools like Cypress to automate end-to-end regression testing. Executing both manual and automated test cases, with exploratory testing to emulate real-world user scenarios. And of course, you’ll identify, replicate and articulate software defects via bug reports, so we can squash them.
Please refer to the Job Description for more information.
You are absolutely committed to meeting user needs in the best, most efficient way. To join us in this role, you’ll need to demonstrate the ability to test software in modern ways, including automated testing. Just as importantly, you’ll bring to the role a collaborative and positive spirit. Your way with people will contribute to a working environment where everyone is empowered and motivated to do their best work.
