Job description

This replacement post is offered on a full time (10 PA) basis although less than full time applications will be considered. Duties will be based primarily on our Pinderfields hospital site in Wakefield although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites and local community services. The main duties of the post will include, as part of their duties: Providing a comprehensive microbiology service including - Consultation and advisory service to colleagues in the Trust and, from time-to-time, primary care and our local mental health trust (included in scheduled PAs). - Support to regular clinical meetings and to postgraduate activities. - Infection prevention and control advice cover when the infection control lead is away - Sharing with the other three consultant microbiologists the task of providing integrated clinical microbiology services to Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (MYTT). - Participation in the weekly timetable of fixed commitments and the consultant work programme (TCS and Circular HC90/16) - Liaison and emergency work, continuing clinical responsibility, teaching, research, audit, interdisciplinary meeting, and CPD, through flexible, professional use of unscheduled time. - On-call duties currently shared on a 1 in 4 basis and assessed as 1PA (average). Most on-call activity is remotely-delivered via telephone or using remote IT-access / electronic notes archive; rarely, on-site attendance is required to support significant incidents or complex cases. - Administrative duties, for which appropriate office space, with networked computer access, and secretarial support is provided (included in allocated time). Training, Continuing Professional Development, and Quality Improvement - Supervision and training for specialty registrars and/or other trainees, when allocated by the regional training programme (none at the present time) - CPD as part of the Royal College of Pathologists CPD Programme Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10PA timetable Specific leadership of a specified clinical area - to be agreed after discussion with colleagues. Examples of such duties currently undertaken within the team include: - Laboratory quality - Haematology - Infection control - Antimicrobial stewardship - Community IV antibiotic provision - Burns - Water safety, theatre ventilation and food safety leads - Research Shared leadership, direction, innovation and clinical engagement, - Implementing effective service improvement strategies and developing strategic partnerships. - Supporting creativity and multi-professional development within the service and team. - Assuring effective leadership and coherent strategies. - Helping the Microbiology Laboratory and Pathology Quality team maintain UKAS accreditation.
