Job Title - Data Protection Officer Location - North West Leicestershire District Council Contract - Temporary Hours - 21.75
The role of a Data Protection Officer (DPO) is to ensure that an organization complies with data protection laws and regulations, safeguarding the privacy and rights of individuals whose personal data the organization processes.
The DPO is responsible for advising the organization on its obligations under relevant data protection laws, monitoring compliance with these laws, and providing guidance on data protection impact assessments, privacy policies, and data breach response procedures.
Key Responsibilities: - To monitor compliance across the organisation to ensure that the Council meets its obligation under data protection legislation and applicable guidance.
- To report to senior management (including the SIRO, Monitoring Officer, CLT and any other relevant officers) on data protection compliance and any associated risks.
- To prepare and present reports to boards/committees (as required) in relation to data compliance and/or any other relevant data protection aspects.
- To ensure that the Council develops, implements, reviews and updates measures to comply with data protection legislation, including but not limited to, maintaining and reviewing an information governance framework to ensure the Council has appropriate policies, procedures and guidance in place.
- To be responsible for the Council's privacy notice and advise on the privacy impact of any proposals, including but not limited to the completion and review of impact assessments in relation to data sharing.
- Ensuring that the Council has an appropriate training programme to make members of staff aware of their responsibilities in relation to information governance and data protection.
- To deal with any complaints in relation to the processing of personal data.
- To be responsible for the Council's approach to dealing with information security incidents and ensure that any personal data breaches are fully investigated and reported through the appropriate channels if appropriate.
- To act as the contact point for the ICO on issues relating to the processing of personal data and to co-operate with the ICO in relation to any enquires and/or investigations.
- To carry out line management responsibilities in respect of the Information Governance Officer in accordance with instructions from the Legal Services Team Manager or Head of Legal and Commercial Services.
Requirements: - Expertise in Data Protection Regulations: A DPO must have a deep understanding of data protection laws and regulations relevant to the organization's operations, such as GDPR, CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), or other local regulations.
- Knowledge of Industry Standards: Familiarity with industry-specific data protection standards and best practices is essential. This includes understanding how to apply regulations within the context of the organization's industry.
- Experience in Privacy Management: Prior experience in managing privacy-related issues, such as conducting privacy impact assessments, developing privacy policies, and implementing privacy controls, is often required.
