Job description

Position available for either part-time or full-time employment. This role requires on-site presence and does not allow for remote work.

The role

As a Lead Mentor, you’ll work on the SCITT training programme to support trainees in a subject-specific area of our secondary curriculum. Our secondary subjects for QTS are: English, Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign Languages (French and Spanish), Computing, Business, Music, History, Geography, Religious Education and PE. You’ll work with a portfolio of trainees to develop their subject knowledge and subject-specific pedagogy to ensure that they achieve QTS and support them to complete their PGCE. You’ll also play a leading role in supporting and developing the mentors of trainees.

The detail:

·        Providing high-quality subject-specific development and support to a portfolio of trainees in the Lead School

·        Supporting subject-specific school-based mentors

·        Teaching a series of subject-specific online and in-person sessions

·        Teaching a series of core online and in-person sessions

·        Supporting mentors with effective observations of trainees teaching (with subject-specific feedback and instructional coaching).

·        Working with mentors to help their trainees develop classroom practices in their QTS subject.

·        Attending Lead Mentor induction and training across the course

·        Working with mentors to ensure trainees meet core requirements for QTS

You’ll take ownership for:

·        Providing exceptional support to your trainees and their mentors

·        Trainee and mentor retention, wellbeing, progress and satisfaction.

·        Identifying areas for development and supporting progress over time

·        Ensuring trainees can be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status

·        Excellent working relationships with all stakeholders

·        Understanding your Safeguarding obligations and the protection of children and young people by completing mandatory training and staying up to date on relevant policies.

About you

The essentials:

Education Sector Knowledge:

·        You’ve got QTS. You have excellent classroom pedagogy and good knowledge of both the Teachers' Standards and Core Content Framework. 

Developing Others:

·        You’ve developed, mentored and coached trainee teachers within an ITT route for at least two years e.g. PGCE, Schools Direct, Teach First etc.

·        You’ve developed other qualified teachers’ practice.

Secondary Phase Knowledge:

·        You are a secondary phase specialist and have at least two years’ experience of classroom teaching in this phase.

Subject Knowledge:

·        You have at least two years’ experience of developing teachers within your subject specialism and experience of teaching your subject up to at least GCSE level. You are a subject matter expert and your knowledge of the pedagogy underpinning your subject specialism is exemplary.

·        You have critically engaged with up-to-date subject-specific research.

Your Professional Development:

·        You are keen to develop your skills and knowledge as a Lead Mentor and will work with the Lead School and Teach First to do this.

The nice to haves:

You have experience of using technology to effectively coach and mentor others

You can demonstrate your knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices and evaluating interventions in schools
