The company:
Phlux is an award-winning tech start-up based in Sheffield, UK. The company has commercialised a breakthrough infrared sensor that will be at the heart of driver safety using LIDAR, securing communication networks with quantum cryptography, and seeing the invisible with 3D imaging.
The company raised £4M of investment in November 2022 and currently employs 12 members of staff divided between Operations, R&D, Sales, Electronics and Management.
The Team:
The successful applicant will join our team as we develop our second product range for LIDAR, advanced driver assisted systems and security systems. We are looking to appoint a Quality Engineer to reinforce the team and who will help to scale up manufacturing and testing capabilities and ensure that all devices are compliant with internal and external customer quality requirements.
We’re currently a team of 11 people looking to scale to 20 by the end of 2024. The applicant should have excellent organisational and communication skills and be comfortable working with engineers, technical sales, and management.
The Role:
We are looking to appoint a full-time Quality Engineer to support product development, testing and quality control of our products.
Responsibilities:
Quality Assurance : Develop and implement quality assurance processes and procedures for the InGaAs APD development project.
Testing and Analysis: Conduct comprehensive testing and analysis of our infrared sensors (APDs) to assess performance, reliability, and conformance to specifications.
Failure Analysis: Investigate and troubleshoot any quality issues or failures, and implement corrective and preventive actions as necessary.
Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation of test results, analysis findings, and quality assurance activities to ensure traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements. Conduct internal audits to ISO 9001:2015 requirements
Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including design, manufacturing, and R&D to address quality-related challenges and drive continuous improvement.
Supplier Management : Collaborate with suppliers to establish quality standards and specifications, and ensure compliance throughout the supply chain.
Typical tasks as Quality Engineer may include:
Set detailed guidelines on what needs to be checked and what the quality standards are for each customer prototype and standard product
Update our Quality Management System (QMS) with incidents, fixes and improvements
Determine quality metrics for all manufacturing procedures (internal and external suppliers)
Monitor the entire production cycle and perform regular tests to identify potential malfunctions as early as possible
Prepare reports on operational efficiency for each manufacturing lot
Inspect product materials and electrical systems for defects and durability
Identify the rootcause of technical issues and report recommended fixes
Prepare reports on malfunctions and corrective/preventive actions (e.g. number of defective raw materials per order)
Review current blueprints and quality documentation
Coordinate with external quality assurance auditors and technicians to ensure legal compliance
Work with internal teams to increase customer satisfaction by improving the quality of the products
Ensure that all possible internal or external non conformance are managed from creation to closure
As fast-growing start-up there will be opportunity for the successful applicant to grow technically and professionally as the company scales. Not the least from opportunities to develop new technical and professional skills in semiconductor device process engineering or/and quality control.
Requirements:Proven experience in quality engineering within the semiconductor or optoelectronics industry,
Strong understanding of semiconductor fabrication processes, device physics, and reliability testing methodologies.
Hands-on experience with failure mode analysis and testing methodologies
In-depth understanding of technical documentation
Familiarity with statistical analysis (Lean Six Sigma methodology)
Great attention to details and problem-solving abilities
A methodical approach to problem solving
Ability to suggest and carry out practical actions to deal with operational issue
Open, honest, willing to learn and be flexible in its approach
Motivated to develop a new technology and see it through ideation to mass scale production

Goals:
3 months
Familiarisation of team and technology.
Familiarisation in our QMS.
Familiarisation of our manufacturing and testing protocols
6 months
Work independently to identify root cause of product failure and put corrective/preventive actions into place
Ownership of auditing internal processes and external suppliers.
Ownership of reporting manufacturing efficiency
9 months
Ownership of QMS activities.
Ownership of defects root cause analysis and corrective actions.
