Senior Sustainable Urban Drainage and Flood Risk Officer

Job Introduction

Hastings is an attractive and vibrant place to live and work and Hastings Council is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to appoint a Senior Sustainable Drainage Officer to join our excellent Planning Services Team. The post has recently been created following the award of a grant through the Planning Skills Delivery Fund. It’s a 3 year post with opportunities to extend.

The role has a salary of £41,418 per annum, offers fully supported hybrid working and a minimum of 27 days annual leave based on a 37 hour working week.

The Role

We would love you to bring your skills, knowledge, and experience to:

• provide support and technical advice to Planning Services as part of their work in validating, assessing and determining planning applications, pre-application queries, planning enforcement and defending decisions at appeal.
• provide support to other parts of the Council in order to reduce and where possible prevent flooding events, to provide technical advice in respect of other council work as far as drainage and flooding is concerned.
• provide support to the community in respect of flood and water related matters, responding to customer queries on such matters.  
• apply for related grants in support of work to prevent and reduce flooding and sustainable urban drainage.
• work closely with key stakeholders including East Sussex County Council, Southern Water and the Environment Agency to investigate flooding and take enforcement action
• work with key stakeholders to create and implement an up to date Surface Water Management Plan.

About The Team

You will be based in the Planning Services Team of 8 Planning Officers and supporting staff. We process around 1000 planning applications a year and are committed to addressing the impact of climate change in a proactive way wherever possible. Your contribution to this work will be vital in shaping how we as a borough move forward.

You will need to manage your own workload effectively to meet tight deadlines while being a part of a dynamic and busy team. As well as this, you must be a confident communicator and negotiator, capable of explaining technical information clearly and sensitively. In addition, you will be confident using IT systems with experience of using spreadsheets and GIS.

We welcome applicants with transferrable skills and there will be detailed on the job and formal training opportunities for the successful candidates. Your work will be mainly home based with occasional days in the office and carrying out site visits as required.
