Job description

We are seeking an innovative and strategic thinker with strong relationship building skills for the role of Innovation Director based at Theobalds Enterprise Centre (TEC), EN8 8YD and Hoddesdon Enterprise Centre (HEC), EN11 0FJ which form the Broxbourne Enterprise Centres (BEC). The Innovation Director will provide pragmatic, high quality strategic business coaching and innovation support to businesses based in the centre, with the objective of enabling business growth, innovation development and commercial success. We provide a great environment for our customers: fledgling and small businesses which are supported in their growth plans in a centrally located, flexible and inspirational environment.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in business; either working at senior director level within large corporates or as a small business owner themselves. Whilst direct experience of providing quality business coaching to early-stage businesses is favourable, we would consider candidates with the inherent skills and aptitude to develop this capability within the role. However, crucial to being successful in this role will be the ability to build relevant business, investment and innovation networks for the centres, and to proactively drive the benefits of collaborative working. More specifically, the Innovation Director will be responsible for delivering on several targets relating to business growth and development and innovation activity.

This role is dual-sited, based at Theobalds Enterprise Centre (TEC), EN8 8YD and Hoddesdon Enterprise Centre (HEC), EN11 0FJ.

Main duties and responsibilities:

The role is responsible for delivery of a full business support roadmap and service for BEC customers from selection to exit. These include:

• Working with the founders to shape their strategy, go-to-market, sales and financial model through an initial diagnostic and ongoing review and support.
• Using your network to spot and capitalise on opportunities for the customers and the centres themselves, identifying opportunities for collaboration between customers and those in the wider eco-system.
• Supporting the development and scaling of new businesses, by providing technical advice across disciplines, coaching and development of the entrepreneurs and SMEs – maybe at times stepping into interim senior management and even co-founder roles.
• Screening and selection of new customers based on the centres’ Gateway Policy.
• Helping customers to develop funding strategies to fulfil the growth stages of the company.
• Helping SMEs to develop exit strategies.
• Helping customers draw up a robust business plan including a roadmap of investment requirements and an agreed set of benchmarks for delivery of the finances.
• Proactively develop a mentor pool, workshop programme and engage with a wide group of stakeholders and professional services firms to provide a wide-ranging support programme.

The Innovation Director will be accountable for providing best business practice advice at regular update meetings, monthly reviews and on an ad-hoc basis.

Personal Competences:

• Data and ROI driven, with a strong understanding of contract delivery KPIs and ability to provide and interpret information in management reports
• Strategic thinker with strong business acumen and a detailed knowledge of the key functions within a business particularly sales & marketing, financial management and operations
• Ability to use own initiative and to be able to identify quickly and effectively how problems can be solved
• Strong networking and relationship building skills with a personal network beneficial to the business support needs of the role
• A passion for innovation and solving problems
• Excellent communication and organisational skills
• Ability to interact with and co-ordinate various stakeholders
