Job description


An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Trust in a corporate Assistant Director role, leading the effective delivery of the Green Plan and driving performance improvement across the Group.

Accountable to the GESH Board and reporting directly to the GESH Director of Estates and Facilities, you will focus the GESH leadership team on the key priorities to maximise the benefits of sustainability and lead the development of the Green Plan and sustainability strategy to reflect wider changes in policy, legislation and technology.

The post will be the key driver ensuring that the NHS targets are achieved at GESH especially:
• For the emissions we control directly (the NHS Carbon Footprint), we will reach net zero by 2040, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2028 to 2032;
• For the emissions we can influence (our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus), we will reach net zero by 2045, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2036 to 2039.
• To lead the trusts in the delivery of the Green Plan objectives, targets and KPI’s and to drive performance improvement across GESH.
• To develop and continually review management systems compliant with ISO14001 that ensure the on-going effective delivery of the green plan.
• To ensure that sustainability and Net Zero Carbon are integrated into the GESH strategic priorities and the strategic priorities of each functional level of the organisation.
• To lead and line manage the Green Plan and Sustainability team

This role will bring together the Green Plan and Sustainability teams across GESH. We are currently developing the team structure and the plan consists of the Assistant Director role, Head of Green Plan and a Green Plan Officer. The Head of Green Plan will be responsible for developing and embedding sustainability principles within the organisation and the Green Plan Officer will be the key support to the Assistant Director and the Head. Together the team will make sustainability happen” at GESH.
• To co-ordinate the corporate approach to sustainability by managing the sustainability team and bringing working groups together to achieve the objectives, targets and KPI’s of the Green Plan.
• To manage the corporate governance structure for the Green Plan and work with the SLT to create organisational change.
• To move the trusts towards sustainable working practices by working at all functional levels of the organisation.
• To integrate sustainability into existing groups and management systems.
• To ensure the Green Plan objectives, targets, KPIs and actions are continually developed and updated to reflect best practice, risk minimisation and opportunities for improvement.
• To help to project manage the achievement of the Green Plan at each functional level of the organisation.
• To development information and data monitoring systems making use of existing IT systems and bespoke software.
• To analyse KPI and sustainability data and use it to inform strategy, action planning and reports to internal and external stakeholders.
• To manage budgetary and financial considerations seeking maximum ROI.
