Job description
To service and maintain fire alarm and associated life safety systems in line with the current requirements applicable to the Heathrow contract, liaising with the Office staff to ensure best practice and the most cost effective solution. To complete and return all company documentation and certification to comply with the company’s systems and procedures. To work as a team with colleagues to maintain & improve the company’s reputation in relation to quality and customer service. The job role will include & require flexible shift working to achieve contract requirements.
Principal Responsibilities
- Carry out scheduled routine servicing in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner in line with the Company’s quality standards.
- Carry out all other necessary works required at customer premises in accordance with the Company’s quality standards.
- Carry out when needed small works and projects works in line with the Company’s quality standards.
- Give prompt and efficient attention to emergency call outs received during working hours, this will including outside working hours during your allocated on call duty periods. Noting that a MAXIMUM incident & site attendance time from request to attend site is 2 HOURS.
- To provide engineering backup and holiday cover as requested by the Engineering Manager.
- Support the shift schedule as required to maintain a reliable and responsive on site service support for the Heathrow contract.
- Effectively communicate with customers to ensure a good understanding of system and site status, particularly system defects that affect its correct function.
- Liaise with the engineering manager and administrator to ensure service commitments are met.
- Plan own work, including routine service/maintenance visits in line with PPM schedule, emergency call out requirements and remedial repairs.
- Ensure legible and timely completion of all company paperwork in line with Company requirements.
- Be responsible for the management and security of own equipment stock in an efficient and economical manner by determining stock levels in relation to work activities and ordering stock items as and when appropriate.
- Operate in accordance with the Company Handbook and all Company and customer’s quality standards and health and safety requirements.
- Pass on any potential leads for further business to the Contract Manager.
- Discuss any suggestions for system/service improvement with the engineering Manager.
- Attend training sessions identified by the Company and identify and communicate to the Engineering Manager any personal training and development needs.
- Identify and advise immediately any on site issues that would otherwise leave the client with lack of protection or coverage of their life safety systems.
Accountable for:
- Leaving customers with fully functioning fire detection and alarm systems, unless the Engineering Manager/Customer has been informed of the reasons that completion is not possible, before leaving the premises.
- All own documentation being completed and reaching the required destinations within agreed time limits.
- Ensuring that customers are always satisfied with the service they receive.
- Following all Heathrow Airport premises rules and regulations, and wearing any work clothing reasonably required by the client.
- Requests to attend site in line with contract requirements.
- Advising any identified Health & Safety Issues immediately.

Skills:
- Able to work independently.
- Able to plan, implement and complete service activities without assistance.
- Able to identify all types of cable associated with fire detection and alarm systems. and to correctly test and terminate the cable ends in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
- Able to operate all required test equipment
- Demonstrates a logical and highly competent approach to system fault diagnosis and rectification.
- Able to add/remove/edit devices from Gent Network systems
- Understands detailed network cause and effect schedule
- Able to programme cause and effect through Gent Comm Tool
- Understands different types of cable containment systems.
- Deal with customers, end-users, construction personnel and in-house staff in a professional manner.
- Verbal and written communication.
Technical knowledge:
- Full and detailed understanding of BS5839 Pt:1 2002 (including A1 & 2) amendments) and specifically Fire Alarm System Maintenance
- Full and detailed understanding of BS5839 Pt 8.
- Completed Units 1,4,5,6 and 8 of FIA Training.
- Understands the basic building service systems, e.g. air conditioning systems, with a view to interfacing with them.
- Fire Alarm System & Network Commissioning, Cause and Effect Programming particularly in relation to Gent Vigilon and similar
- Gent Supervisor 3 Software
- Understanding, Maintenance, Commissioning & Programming of PA/VA systems
- Has a comprehensive understanding of the causes and cures of fire alarm problems, including an ability to recommend changes to practices and processes that may cause false alarms as well as changes to the fire detection and alarm system.
- Basic Electrical Safety training (ECA)
- Manufacturers training with a minimum requirement of Gent equipment in respect of servicing,
- Manufacturers Training in all other equipment as required. This may include VESDA, Radio, Fire Suppression and will be decided by the Engineering Manager based on the needs of the Contract.
- Fire Extinguishing System Maintenance & Commissioning
The Heathrow Engineer will have suitable Qualifications and Training to support his skills, technical knowledge and responsibilities.
Standards:
- BS7671 (if involved in installation work) • BS6266 where required.
- To operate business processes within the framework of BN EN ISO 9001:2000, LPS1014 and ISO14001:2004
Documentation:
- Able to read prepared plans and technical sketches, service and repair systems in accordance with information provided, and record changes to and the location of equipment on the installation drawings and the O & M manual.
- Identifies and reports the requirement for new and additional works to the Engineering Manager.
- Accurately completes appropriate paperwork in line with Company requirements
- Calculates the incidence of false alarms and prepares advice for the customer on the implications of these incidents.
Health and Safety:
- Has completed and fully complies with the necessary H & S training – Understanding Safety.
- Fully understands and complies with the Company’s health and safety procedures and Environmental policy, and has signed a copy of the Trinity Engineering Health and safety blueprint.
- Comply with any additional Health & Safety requirements requested by Heathrow Airport.
