Job description
Reddam House Berkshire are seeking to appoint a Head of Geography to lead our successful and thriving Geography department.. Geography is a very popular subject at both GCSE and A Level and is a compulsory part of the curriculum at Key Stage Three and the AQA syllabus is followed.
Role Summary
- To lead and deliver an outstanding Geography curriculum for all pupils;
- Direct responsibility for Geography in Y7 to Y13 ensuring the highest standards of teaching and learning are achieved;
- To instil a passion for learning, with a dynamic and imaginative approach to teaching and the design of the curriculum.
Policy/Strategic direction and development
- Contribute to whole school policy‐making and strategic planning as required by the Principal.
- Prepare, monitor and update annual departmental plans in consultation with colleagues.
- Take the lead in ensuring that school policies and strategies are embedded in schemes of work and departmental plans.
- Take a role in testing and selection of candidates for Academic Scholarships.
- Work with SLT to ensure there is a smooth transition from junior to secondary.
Leadership and management
- Take responsibility for the pastoral care and welfare of all departmental staff.
- Establishing, reviewing regularly and revising where necessary the syllabus for each year group to ensure an outstanding Geography curriculum for all pupils is delivered, and to ensure the best possible preparation for GCSE and A Level.
- Monitor progress made in implementing subject plans and achieving targets, evaluating the effect on teaching and learning, and use this analysis to guide further improvement.
- Ensure the Teaching and Learning policies as stated in the Teacher’s Handbook are implemented and monitored across the department.
- Support the team in achieving constructive working relationships with pupils.
- Keep up to date with new initiatives, research and changes to the curriculum and specifications.
- Support other members of the department in the implementation of all aspects of their work and to support them when issues arise.
- Attend meetings as requested by the Head of Academics and submit meeting minutes about the work of the Department
- Communicate, where relevant, issues raised in Middle Leader’s meetings which affect the Department.
Teaching and learning
- Oversee the planning, resourcing and delivering of outstanding lessons, ensuring there are Medium Term Plans and Assessment Planners for each year group.
- Work with the SENDCo and other Study Support staff to ensure that subject specific targets and work is matched to the pupils’ needs.
- Ensure CHEX is evident within the department and that all pupils are challenged and extended – teaching to the top for all.
- Ensure that he/she is up to date with developments in their subject area and that this is cascaded to department staff.
- Ensure RSE, spiritual, moral and ethical considerations are taken when leading the department and curriculum review.
- Ensure effective development of pupils’ literacy, numeracy and information technology skills through the subject;
Management of resources
- Establish staff and resource needs for the subject and advise the Principal and Head of Academics of likely priorities for expenditure, and allocate available subject resources with maximum efficiency to meet the objectives of the school and subject plans and to achieve value for money
- Manage departmental budget, planning and controlling expenditure.
- Oversee the resources of the department, ordering and controlling materials and equipment
- Coordinate enrichment beyond the classroom including field and day trips.
- Ensure that relevant displays are up in all Geography classrooms.
- Contribute to displays around the school and celebrating the subject with theme days and other events.
Monitoring, evaluation & assessment
- Oversee the assessing, recording and reporting on the development and attainment of pupils – ensuring Cycle Tests and Examinations meet requirements set out in Teaching Handbook
- Carry out systematic checks of feedback and marking, particularly CRAFT, in line with the school policy.
- Use data effectively to identify pupils who are underachieving in the subject and, where necessary, create and implement effective plans of action to support those pupils; set expectations and targets for staff and pupils in relation to standards of pupil achievement and the quality of teaching; establish clear targets for pupil achievement, and evaluate progress and achievement in the subject by all pupils, including those with special educational and linguistic needs.
- Prepare for and present to SLT the post results analysis of GCSE and A Level results data, and proposed actions.
- Understand and oversee the marking and moderation processes; taking responsibility for ensuring exam entry and coursework deadlines are met.
- Review baseline data including NGST, NGRT and CAT4 and set targets for both pupils and the department.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- To have a working knowledge of teachers' professional duties, legal liabilities and responsibilities;
- To have a working knowledge of all relevant Policies and Procedures;
- To establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues and other staff, as appropriate;
