We are looking for a Hydrometry and Telemetry Officer (Level 2) to join our team who will install and operate field equipment that measures river level, river flow, groundwater and rainfall over a large geographical area.

You will analyse, validate and quality assure the data collected from this equipment and upload the data on to the hydrometric archive.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, practical person who enjoys working outdoors, in all weathers, carrying out quality assurance at your sites, responding to instrument faults and carrying out reactive site visits during incidents.

Other parts of the role will involve making sure that your sites are safe and ensure they are well kept.

You'll need to have an aptitude for numbers, demonstrate a logical and analytical mind, and be prepared to pay special attention to detail when it comes to analysing trends in large data sets. With strong practical problem solving skills, you will be experienced in handling and managing data. Initiative is essential, you will have an eye for detail, be efficient and work in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The team

The Hydrometry and Telemetry (H&T) team provides support to core telemetry, hydrometric and hydrological activities undertaken in the Wessex area. H&T delivers a vital service that underpins much of the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities relating to flood forecasting and water resources. We are a busy, experienced and well-established team made up of individuals with a variety of skills relating to the nature of our work.

Experience/skills required

Experience of field work, lone working, water safety, risk assessment and scientific instrumentation would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will have the capability to check and calibrate complex instrumentation.

Good communication skills are a must as you will be required to interact effectively with the wider team and our customers.

A degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline is required or demonstrate competence through industry experience.

You must hold a current UK driving licence.

You will be working in and near water as part of this role therefore you will need to be comfortable working in this type of environment.

Everyone starting in a new role will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support needed. As part of your comprehensive induction, you will be provided with all the equipment required for your role.
