Senior Communications Manager

OFFICE FOR NUCLEAR REGULATION

Location

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire | United Kingdom

Job description

ONR has a crucial role to play in a fast-changing energy landscape.

So have you.

The challenge

Increasingly in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK. As our Senior Communications Manager, you’ll join us at a hugely important time, as we prepare for new challenges in the light of the government’s ambitions for nuclear power.

Take on a key role as ONR looks to the future.

The role

Due to the UK’s energy security and net zero plans, there’s more focus than ever on the nuclear industry – and on ONR. Playing an integral role in our busy Policy and Communications Directorate, you’ll help develop measurable communications to support the delivery of ONR’s corporate priorities. You’ll deliver effective and engaging internal communications strategies and content, supporting staff through change. You’ll also support the development of our digital engagement channels, including video, and help continuously improve our communications service. Eventually joining our on-call press office rota, you’ll will be expected to provide support with external stakeholder communications including media handling. You’ll also play a key role in the production of statutory publications including quality assurance for consistency across brand, tone and content.

The person

An experienced professional, you’ve worked in a senior role in a communications team, or media environment, at a large and complex organisation. Thanks to this background, you will have evidence of delivering effective and engaging internal communications strategies and content, and practical experience of external and/or stakeholder communications. You will be able to advise colleagues at all levels and balance multiple priorities, remaining calm under pressure and maintaining quality of output. You will be competent in delivering and evaluating digital communication activity (including video, web and intranet) and managing social media channels. Organised and confident in your skills, you’ll have what it takes to manage a small team and work flexibly across communication and engagement disciplines.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £43,524 - £52,565 (plus £4,052 London Weighting if applicable). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement. Like all our roles, this one offers flexible, hybrid working. However, you will need to visit the office regularly.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider international nuclear community.
