The Opportunity…

Joining as a key member of the HPC Site Construction management team, reporting directly to the Head of Construction Health and Safety, you'll play a vital role in setting and upholding the highest standards of health, wellbeing, and safety excellence. From the construction site to the boardroom, you'll provide essential support and direction, ensuring safety measures resonate at every level, from operatives to senior management.

You’ll be at the forefront of liaising with EDF Energy teams and influencing T1 contractors responsible for project delivery. Your task extends to guiding all contractors to enhance risk management strategies as the project progresses. This involves delivering clear, timely messages and coaching senior managers within each organisation, ensuring a unified approach to risk mitigation throughout the project's various stages.

What you’ll be doing…

In this role, you will deputise for the Head of Construction Health & Safety, overseeing department activities and resources to ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and emergency standards. Additionally, you'll support the management of emergent site health and safety issues, ensuring all department activities align with NSL arrangements, statutory regulations, and company protocols. Other roles and responsibilities also include:

• Orchestrating departmental collaborations with regulatory bodies like the Office for Nuclear Regulation, ensuring swift and effective coordination of interventions.
• Spearheading departmental activities to uphold rigorous safety standards, ensuring alignment with the HPC Way, and meeting defined service levels and targets.
• Managing and supporting various teams such as occupational health, hygiene, lifting, and temporary works, while driving the implementation of Principal Contractor arrangements for full compliance across the construction site.
• Collaborating closely with the HPC safety leadership and executive teams to devise and execute construction site policies and strategies in alignment with project objectives.
• Overseeing the development, implementation, and review of Principal Contractor arrangements to maintain alignment with the site’s risk profile, fostering innovation and best practices from the HPC Supply Chain.
• Championing safety improvement initiatives and innovations, fostering a culture of continuous improvement across the construction site.
• Monitoring departmental metrics, best practices, and performance trends to drive informed decision-making and ongoing improvement efforts.
• Providing vital support in accurately preparing, monitoring, and controlling departmental business plans and budgets, championing initiatives for continuous improvement and reporting progress to the HPC Construction Director.
• Playing a key role in supporting the site’s emergency scheme, ensuring effective response mechanisms are in place.
• Supporting the Project in cultivating a robust project safety culture consistent with recognised nuclear safety standards, ensuring all direct reports are adequately appraised, trained, and developed to meet project needs.

Who you are…

In this role, we’re looking for you to hold a Degree, or equivalent, in Health & Safety, Engineering or Construction and be liked with a Chartered Membership. With this, you’ll hold significant HSE experience including running a HSE group within a large project and construction engineering environment. We’re also looking for you to hold a NEBOSH HSE Diploma or equivalent to be suitable for this role. Other requirements also include:

• Identify key stakeholders to drive continuous improvement across projects and within EDF.
• Build strong, trust-based relationships across EDF Energy and the construction industry.
• Balance results-driven focus with a team-centred approach.
• Operate effectively in a large corporate environment.
• Communicate effectively to convey ideas and goals.
• Establish and execute strategic vision.
• Stay abreast of national and international HSE standards.
• Experience interfacing with ONR/HSE.
• Thorough understanding of CDM Regulations.
