Job overview

This is an exciting, albeit challenging, time to join Cambridge University Hospitals as our Director of Strategy. The Trust Strategy, CUH Together, runs from 2022-2025, and sets out our priorities of Improving Patient Care, Supporting Our Staff and Building for the Future. We are particularly focused this year on access to care, responding to the long elective waiting list and how we can improve productivity. Alongside this, we are also looking to take advantage of being a large academic healthcare organisation, securing benefits for patients through innovation and research. CUH works closely with partners in our local NHS system, as well as with Trusts across the East of England region, and industry and academic partners on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The Director of Strategy is as the forefront of how the Trust responds to the challenges we face, as well as realising the opportunity of effective collaborations and aligning strategic programmes of work to deliver real impact. This is a role for someone who can set clear direction and an inspiring vision, while navigating through complexity and ambiguity; someone who can build coalitions based on common objectives and influence others; and someone who is always listening to others and seeking to improve. 

Main duties of the job

To have overall responsibility for the Trust strategy, strategic development and the annual planning cycle.

The Director of Strategy will work with Divisions and corporate areas on the development of strategies and strategic planning, including forging productive working relationships with senior leaders and multi-disciplinary teams.

Person specification

Qualifications

• Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area with additional specialist training in relevant field e.g. Health Care Strategy.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.
• Management / Leadership qualification or equivalent experience.
• Additional management qualifications and national engagement roles commensurate with a senior NHS position.

Experience

• Substantial professional experience in producing business plans for large, complex service organizations, project management and business development including experience at senior management level.
• Experience of developing strategy in a large complex organisation and business development.
• Proven track record of delivering multiple large and complex projects on time.
• Proven experience of working successfully with and through senior stakeholders (clinical and non-clinical staff).
• Experience of successful delivery in a high pressure environment and to tight deadlines
• Significant experience of working with high profile external stakeholders, including at national level.
• Proven record of establishing, leading, developing and effectively managing teams.

Knowledge

• Specialist knowledge of managing complex projects/programme management, and strategic planning theory and techniques.
• Politically adept with an astute grasp of relevant issues displaying a clear high level understanding of both national and local agenda and how they can be managed.
• Excellent knowledge of business development and current affairs in Health and Social Care.
• Knowledge of current and pending law and legislation governing NHS Foundation Trusts and business development activity within the NHS.
• Knowledge of NHS resource allocation policies and system interaction.

Skills

• Ability to communicate in hostile, emotional, antagonistic or complex environments (e.g. consultations and organisational change).
• Exceptional written and verbal skills - communicating, negotiating and influencing with impact verbally and in writing at the highest levels - with a particular emphasis on writing for business purposes and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
• Highly developed interpersonal skills including confidence to work at an individual level, in small groups and in front of large audiences.
• Effective negotiation and listening skills, ability to develop creative ‘win win’ solutions and manage a wide variety of situations.
• Ability to influence and engage clinical and non-clinical, internal and external colleagues, directors and the public.
• Ability to use judgment to weigh up diverse, and complex numerical and qualitative information and views to identify key issues and make recommendations for action.
• Ability to translate national policy into local and organisational strategy.
• Ability to adopt a systematic approach to making judgments regarding highly complex situations using varied sources of information, managing competing priorities and conflicting information.

• Evidence of management of a large multi-disciplinary team.
• Coaching skills.
