The Environmental Graduate will play a leading role at managing and coordinating Environmental Management within the Highways contract. They will ensure compliance and understanding of Environmental legislative requirements and play a key role at implementing robust control measures on contract.

What is the role?
The Environmental Graduate will play a leading role at managing and coordinating Environmental Management within the Highways contract. They will ensure compliance and understanding of Environmental legislative requirements and play a key role at implementing robust control measures on contract
Planning
- Coordinate and ensure compliance and development to the Environmental Management System via the company IMS system to ensure information is well-presented and current.
- Working with the team on planning works, ensuring suitable surveys are being carried out, key environmental aspects, impacts and controls are included within environmental management plans / risk assessments.
- Advising on Environmental management plans and Site waste management plans
Operations
- Delivery of project-based work assignments
- Keeping any licences and exemptions up to date
- Advising on Property Management requirements (facilities management) and being a driver on contract for Colas Group Environmental Audits (Colas SA Echo Environmental Checklist)
- Auditing both ourselves but also the supply chain where necessary to ensure compliance with the system.
Performance
- Key understanding of ISO 14001, ensuring contract compliance and it’s development.
- Understanding environmental contractual requirements
- Collation and presentation of performance data and trend analysis, including:
- Audits (Nonconformance Frequency Rate and Summary Reports)
- Preparation of process performance data for processes owned by the Environmental Manager
- Provision of assistance to internal customers in respect of the services provided by the Environmental team within Colas.
Management System
- Management and development of the Management Systems Audit Programme for internal and external assessments for the environmental disciplines
- Maintenance of the audit programme in liaison with external registration bodies, internal SEQ teams and Colas managers
- Undertake Environmental and Energy audits, assessments and effectively manage Environmental Impacts and Aspects relating to the Highways contract.
- Maintenance of the Audit Database, recording audit results and coordination of Corrective Action Plans in response to audit findings
Colas LTD support
- Working with Colas LTD / Colas Group to develop and support Colas’ journey to Net-Zero and share best practice on contract.
- Supporting Colas with innovations within the Highways sector promoting reductions with Carbon and supporting reduced environmental impacts.
Other
- Coordinating with group and ensure facilitation and support of external auditing requirements.
- Carrying out any other appropriate duties as assigned by the department managers
- Ensuring that all operations carried out within your area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for safety of visitors, other members of staff and yourself.
- Building and developing affective relationships with Client and Customer, Supply chains and Key Stakeholders, incorporating regular meetings and site visits.
- Maintaining a professional approach positively reflecting the image of the company.
- Promote and enhance safety awareness in the business, encouraging a zero tolerance to unsafe acts and a zero target for LTIs
- Ensuring that all operations carried out within your area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for safety of visitors, other members of staff and yourself.
- Ensuring compliance with Colas safety & quality procedures.
- Maintaining compliance with agreed policy on procurement of goods and services
- Assisting and upholding discipline within the business ensuring company compliance at all times
- Undertake all other appropriate duties as assigned by your line manager
Who is best suited for the role?
A degree in Environmental management or a similar degree
Experience within a similar field is desirable, not essential
Someone who has a real passion for the environment and would like to make a change.
