Job description
Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall (SMH) is much more than a preparatory school – it is a family to which children know they belong. We have a story that is more than 200 years old and we now sit at the cutting edge in prep school education with our traditions to support us.
SMH provides the first steps in each child’s education at Stonyhurst, characterised by a seamless education from age 3 to 18. We are a Roman Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition. Our pupils are encouraged to work hard and achieve their personal best, whether it is in the classroom, on the sports field, or through the myriad of other opportunities they have for their personal development and all round growth.
One of our principal aims is for every child to feel that their contribution in school life is valid and worthwhile, and that their special gifts are celebrated and their needs are recognised.
The new Head of Music (SMH) will be joining the single Music Department which operates across Saint Mary’s Hall (3-13) and Stonyhurst College (13-18). The department is led by the Director of Music, and there is also an Assistant Director of Music and fourteen Visiting Music Teachers. An Assistant Houseparent who is a trained music teacher also works in the department, and a wide range of other colleagues participate in or lead musical activities. Stonyhurst is the only school which leads a programme funded by the National Schools’ Singing Programme, and there is a Choral Director who works on creating and delivering bespoke singing-led music curricula in primary schools around the region.
Music at SMH has considerable strengths, particularly in the field of musical theatre. The new Head of Music will have the opportunity to work closely with colleagues across both schools in building on these strengths and developing new initiatives in a spirit of mutual support.
