Job description
Prospectus is delighted to be partnering with a charity in the recruitment of their new Head of Finance. The organisation is a dynamic, growing charity, with a mission to ensure that every child has 1:1 reading support at the time they need it most.
To achieve this, the charity runs two programmes – Chapter One: Online Reading Volunteers and Chapter One: Early Literacy Intervention. Their unique Online Reading Volunteer programme pairs disadvantaged, struggling five- to seven-year-old (KS1) readers with reading support volunteers who are working professionals. The volunteer ask is very focused: readers commit 30 minutes a week to read with a child using a bespoke digital platform for an entire academic year. The results are transformative, boosting children's reading confidence and ability.
This is an exciting and newly created role in the charity, in which you will be part of the Senior Leadership Team and will report to the CEO. This position is offered as a permanent, part-time (three day a week) opportunity, with fully remote work in which you can be based anywhere within the UK.
As the Head of Finance, you will provide thoughtful and proactive leadership for the organisation’s finance and accounting strategy and functions. You will be responsible for all aspects of budgeting, financial reporting, financial planning and strategy across the organisation, including legislative compliance and best financial practice. You will have overall responsibility for both financial and management accounts, including financial reporting systems, and will play fundamental role in the implementation of the organisation’s strategic plan. As this is a new role within the organisation it’s an opportunity for the right candidate to bring their energy, expertise and creativity to shape the organisation’s approach to financial strategy and planning. The Head of Finance line manage the HR & Finance Assistant, and work closely with the charity’s external Bookkeeper, with responsibility for reporting to the organisation's Board.
To be successful in this role, you will hold a professional accountancy qualification – CFA, CIMA, ACA, ACCA or CIPFA, or possess substantial experience in a senior finance role in a charity. You will have solid experience of finance leadership and strategy, together with a thorough, practical understanding of management accounting principles and techniques. You will have experience in managing investments, as well as knowledge and experience in using/developing QuickBooks and experience with Salesforce. You will have experience of managing staff, leading the development of business opportunities, and an ability to write reports and present financial information to Trustees/Board. You should possess knowledge and experience of payroll production, controls, and processes, as well as excellent technical accounting and analytical skills, and an awareness of the importance of data security best practice and GDPR regulations. You should also have excellent IT/spreadsheet skills. Although not essential, previous experience of overseeing SORP-compliant statutory accounts and coordinating audit processes is desirable.
