Job description

Ensure an effective and efficient reception service is provided to patients and any other visitors to the department. Check patients’ details and what tests are requested; explain waiting and queuing arrangements to patients and give notice of waiting times. Sign in all visitors to the department and notify the relevant person of the arrival of their visitor. Receive and make telephone calls on behalf of the Phlebotomy Department as required; divert calls and take messages, ensuring accuracy of detail and prompt appropriate delivery of messages. Ensure blood request forms and sample request forms are completed with the appropriate level of information on arrival. Check the sample box hourly and put all samples in the blue bag for collection. Hourly blood collections from all bleeding rooms to be sent to the lab. Undertake a weekly stock check for all items ordered from Pharmacy stores. Prepare bag with requested stock for Clinics on clinic days. Prepare all 24-hour urine bottles. Label all bottles acid or non-acid and ensure acid bottles are locked in the appropriate store cupboard. Collect and collate data for waiting times, footfall and numbers of patients waiting. Maintain a clean and tidy working environment throughout all of the Phlebotomy area, including the waiting area. Keep patient information leaflets well stocked and tidy in and around the department. Arrange all bookings for couriers delivering samples/parcels to other sites. Sign for deliveries via couriers and ensure they reach the appropriate person/department. Contact the Transport Department to book in patients returning via transport. To attend staff meetings as and when required. Dispose of all confidential waste in the correct manner. When last to leave at the end of the day, ensure that the building is totally secured and shut down. Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff. Demonstrate on going competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (Continuous Professional Development) activities. Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested by the Phlebotomy Manager or Phlebotomy Supervisors. Safety: To observe safety regulations and attend mandatory fire, manual handling and other course as required. To assist in the investigations of any incidents. Participate in risk assessment monitoring. Follow all applicable infection control procedures, maintaining work areas free from hazards. Use personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines. To ensure that the equipment within area of work is maintained and operated as per SOP’s To comply with iPP policy for annual mandatory updates and have knowledge of COSHH and Lifting and Handling Policies
