Hays are recruiting for a job as a Full-Time Behaviour Specialist Teaching Assistant in Rhondda Cynon Taf for a Special Educational Needs School / Pupil Referral Unit which caters for pupils of Secondary School age with a variety of additional learning, emotional, and social needs as well as challenging behaviour. The role is confirmed for the academic year and may continue beyond this date. This role will consist of working with a small group of students of Key Stage 3 (KS3) age with complex additional learning, social, and emotional needs, supporting their engagement in lessons, their mental wellbeing, as well as avoiding / de-escalating any challenging behaviours. The pupils can be particularly challenging and may become verbally abusive upon occasion due to the emotional support they require. Therefore, patience, empathy, and understanding are crucial elements of the role. The staff are passionate about their work and are there to support students and fellow staff members alike.
Your new role The role is confirmed long-term for an immediate start, working 5 days a week. Duties relating to this role include but are not limited to:
- Working with a small group of Key Stage 3 students with complex additional needs.
- Offering ad-hoc 1:1 support to students.
- Demonstrating high levels of patience and empathy when dealing with challenging behaviour.
- Assisting teachers when implementing their lesson plans by ensuring that the children are engaged and cared for throughout.
- Offering support to students with a wide range of sometimes severe learning difficulties.
- Creating and maintaining a safe, positive, and enjoyable learning environment even when placed under pressure.
- Working closely as part of a quick, efficient, and consistent team with other members of the teaching staff to provide the best care possible for the pupils.
What you\'ll need to succeed
To be considered for this role, it is required that you possess at least 40 days of relevant experience working or volunteering within a school or with children over the course of the last 2 - 3 years. Some of the key attributes and skills needed for this role include empathy, patience, and calmness. Further desired traits include responsiveness, problem-solving skills, commitment, and a high degree of motivation. A desired qualification is to be Team Teach trained. Experience working with challenging behaviour or additional learning needs is desirable within this setting.
