About the role
We are seeking a motivated researcher with expertise in sediment biogeochemistry to join our multidisciplinary team, working across NOC and with our international collaborators. In this position you will leverage your experience in designing and implementing laboratory and field experiments, as well as conducting geochemical analyses of sediments and pore waters to conduct independent research in this specialized area. You will work across a spectrum of projects, initially using sediments to gain insights into the evolution of hydrothermal vents, assessing the impacts of coastal and deep-sea mining, and studying organic carbon and pollution transport and its effects on important ecosystems in submarine canyons as part of a new multidisciplinary project. Work will involve sample collection and processing, geochemical analysis using the world class facilities located within the onsite British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF), other geochemical methods (including ICP-MS and ICP-OES) and geochemical modelling. The postholder will be responsible for producing academic peer-reviewed papers, presenting at conferences and workshops, and actively participating in such events. The position is offered at postdoctoral level and you will be encouraged to develop independent research ideas and proposals in collaboration with others at NOC. Career development support will be provided through mentorship and targeted training. This role includes opportunities for seagoing science onboard NOC research vessels or other ships to carry out sampling and experiments. NOC is committed to supporting researchers and therefore this is offered as an open-ended appointment, giving the successful applicant the stability to develop their own research portfolio.
About you
You should have a high level of technical knowledge and analytical expertise in sediment biogeochemistry. Our ideal candidate would have experience in areas such as biogeochemistry of trace elements and inorganic pollutants in marine sediments and preferentially also have expertise in biogeochemical transport reaction modelling. You should have a PhD and some postdoctoral experience in a relevant field and also should have a track-record of internationally peer-reviewed publications in the field. Location
This position will be based in Southampton. The centre is well connected by public transport and has ample cycle parking in addition to free onsite car-parking.
