Job description
Join the Solutions Development Department at Displaydata as a Junior Hardware Design Engineer. We are looking for an electronics design engineer to be an integral part of our solutions design team, developing world leading digital paper solutions. The responsibilities extend into analogue, digital, RF and microcontroller design, prototype board development, debugging, documentation, type approval and verification testing activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Be involved in the development of Electronic Shelf Edge Label products (ESLs), and RF base station hardware required to communicate and control label networks of more than 200,000 devices per installation.
2. Engage in all design phases: new product introduction, including concepting and architecture; product design; prototype test; supplier interfaces; and ramp-up.
3. Maintain existing product hardware designs by improving the manufacturing process, reducing the product cost where possible; and validating new/second source components.
4. Support the creation of production test hardware to minimise test time and meet our demanding quality standards.
5. Assist with compliance, regulatory testing and ensure our products meet applicable safety and quality standards.
6. Develop compliance tests to ensure products meet the stated lifetimes.
7. Manage workload effectively, maintaining a flexible, positive, proactive, and creative approach.
8. Ensure that all activities are undertaken and controlled in accordance with the business’s processes.
9. Be totally comfortable working in a rewarding but stressful and demanding work environment.
10. Collaborate with software, mechanics, operations, and support teams.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge / Experience
Key Requirements
· Relevant electronics or related engineering degree or equivalent educational experience.
· At least 2 years’ experience in a technical product development environment of: electronics design, development, test and documentation
· Exposure to low power embedded 8-bit, 16 bit or 32-bit microcontrollers; or wireless microcontrollers.
· Exhibit knowledge of application of low power management design techniques; particularly a background in the design of battery powered portable equipment.
· Experience with mixed signal electronics and low power SMPS.
· Knowledge of CAD design tools – (preferably Altium), schematic capture and PCB layout techniques.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the design trade-offs between functionality, quality and cost in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
· A relevant background in collaborating with mechanical design teams to package and integrate electronic components.
Desired Requirements
· Knowledge or understanding of scripting and basic programming principles.
· Practical working knowledge of RF principles and the principles of tuning RF electronics especially in the sub 1GHz and 2.4GHz RF spectrum.
· Experience of implementing high volume manufacturing of products in the Far East.
· Familiarity with designing and testing embedded RF products to meet CE and FCC type approval.
· Familiar with techniques of soldering and de-soldering 0402 - 0805 SMD components and surface mount ICs.
· An understanding of the use RF T&M equipment.
