Job description
An innovative start-up business that has recently acquired a major investment round is currently recruiting a Pilot Plant Manager for its team based in Cambridge. The business focuses on a natural alternative to plastic derived from plant-based proteins - a first of its kind in the industry.
Their mission is to replace the world’s most polluting plastics, commonly used in everyday life using their next-generation material. As part of their engineering team, you will lead site engineering projects to develop equipment design, manage pilot line operations and ensure compliance is met with ISO 9001/14001 standards.
This role will suit a highly qualified process development scientist/engineer possessing strong scale-up experience coupled with a strong mechanical understanding of process equipment.
Pilot Plant Manager responsibilities
Leading site engineering projects to develop equipment design, line configurations and process controls of semi-continuous processes.
Leading facilities management of our new pilot plant, ensuring regulatory and legal compliance for the site, security and all regular checks, maintenance and calibration are completed on site.
Leading pilot line operations for both process development trials and food-safe resin production, including production scheduling, regulatory compliance, and working with HACCP, and GMPs.
Leading site environmental, health and safety and process safety, including embedding a strong EHS culture, training, risk assessment, near miss and accident reporting and investigation, identification, and resolution of hazards.
Working with Quality Safety Manager to ensure compliance with defined policies and procedures including food safety and ISO 9001 & 14001.
Working with the team to ensure all materials are available for trials or production runs.
Input into NPD process.
Manage Engineering Technician and future site operators.
Deputising for the Operations Manager, including representation on the senior management team.
Pilot Plant Manager requirements
Degree-level qualification in an engineering or scientific discipline – such as Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry.
Project engineering skills, ensuring any new proposed developments meet EHS standards and process safety.
Process innovation / scale-up experience with technical skills across engineering disciplines (electrical, mechanical, automation).
Detailed mechanical understanding of processing equipment in particular of mixers for entraining powders into liquids, particle size reduction equipment and liquid-liquid mixing.
Experience in designing, operating, improving, and maintaining Pilot Plant scale equipment systems with good fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
Experience managing complex process engineering projects and activities between multiple parties and ensuring completion to time, cost and quality targets.
Excellent health and safety knowledge with a track record of building a strong EHS culture and experience putting principles of managing a hazardous environment into practice.
Good knowledge of UK statutory requirements for safety, HACCP, GMP and ISO 9001 & 14001 standards.
